French V Course Overview

Prerequisite:     French 4 (with a B+- average

Course DescriptionCollege level (AP) Course which is the second half of an advanced course taught at a native level of proficiency, and focusing on listening, speaking, writing and reading.  Target skills for this class are those of a French 11th Grade in a French High School

Process

Attitude:   Students will desire to continue further studies of French language at the college level, because of their genuine curiosity towards French culture.

Application: Students read and appreciate French press and literature, view French movies, and discuss ideas and values with French speaking people.

Research:  Using internet and the daily newspaper, Liberation, students read authentic French data.  Using CD-ROM students have access to French museums.

Writing:  With daily practice and the use of journals and essays, students continue to refine their skills.  By the end of the school year, students are expected to express themselves at the level of a 11thgrader in a French high school.

Speaking/Listening:  Listening skills are sharpened through study of films and French TV news.  Speaking skills are strengthened through on-going oral class participation, debates and oral reports.

Thinking Skills:  Students are continually discussing, questioning and comparing values and cultural behaviors.  Ethical questions are explored through literature.

Group Skills:  Interaction with other students is continual.  Sharing of ideas is a key component in this course. 

Ethics:  Intellectual honesty and genuine curiosity for the language and culture as well as concern for the group are essential in and out the class

1.  How does the study of another language help the learner put his/her own cultural values in perspective.

2.  What is the relationship between language and cultural values?

3.  How does the mastering of the French language affect professional interactions

 Technology Use and Library Use

  • Internet research (use of internet as a tool to access French data and information)

  • CD-ROM and video tapes (movies)

  • Powerpoint (use of powerpoint as a support for oral presentations)

  • Video camera (use of the camera as a support for oral presentations)

  • Word documents (editing of work in the resource center)

Grammar:        

  • Complete review of French grammar

  • Elements of the sentence (nouns, adjectives, pronouns, verbs)

  • Verbs (regular and irregular): modes and tenses (indicative, conditional, subjunctive, imperative, infinitive)

  • Sentences:  affirmative, negative, interrogative

  • Clauses:   relatives, completives
