You will
compose and record in a variety of musical pieces using state of the art
sequencing and recording equipment and complete the semester with a
portfolio demo CD of the class compositions. While creating your own
songs you will study rhythmic, melodic, and chordal elements of music as
well as song form, recording techniques and a wide variety of musical
genres. The assignment goals will be specific but you will have plenty
of opportunities to create music in styles that interest you.
Song Projects
Melody Etude: melody, scale, and harmony
Rhythm Etude: rhythm, style, time signature
Choral and Scale Etude: chord progression
Inspired Song: study of personal artist choice
Final Piece: application of semester work
Evaluation
Grades are based on the achievement of the specific musical goals of each
composition project (65%), follow-up written reviews (25%), and quizzes (10%).
Differences in individual’s musical background and competency will be easily
accommodated into our workshop format.
Composition due
dates must be met. Late assignments will be graded
down a minimum of 10%.
Class discussions
depend on timeliness.
Extra credit will be
accepted on an individually approved basis.
Homework
You will read
music periodicals, complete written reviews, listen to various styles of music
at home. Music is a constant part of your life, so enjoy it. You are expected to
bring recordings of your favorite music to share with the class. Most of your
composing will be done during class, but you will be expected to do some
preparation and review at home and you may need to schedule extra studio time to
meet production deadlines.
Absences
Because of the studio nature of the class, attendance is
important for success. Missed class work will have to be rescheduled in the
music studio after school or during free periodswith instructor.
Supplies
You will need a two hole Japanese style folder and a pencil each day.
Studio Equipment
Primary compositions will be made using the Alesis QS 6.1 synthesizer and Mark
of the Unicorn’s Freestyle composing software. Advanced pieces may include
acoustic tracks such as voice or guitar using our digital audio facilities. If
you are interested in purchasing equipment for home I would be happy to advise
you.
Music composition is valuable a life long skill. Though I hope you will continue
to create music after this class, I can guarantee you will never hear music the
same. To take full advantage of our program be sure to communicate your musical
needs and concerns to me through out the semester.
