Factors Considered in ASIJ Admissions Decisions

Academic ability, as demonstrated through prior grades and standardized test scores.

Behavior, as demonstrated by report cards and confidential recommendations.

Availability of other educational options in Tokyo.

Space available in the classroom and space available in the required support program.

When space is limited in a classroom, at a grade level, or in a required support service
program, we give priority to applicants who are:

children of alumni,

have siblings enrolled or concurrently applying to ASIJ,

temporarily relocating to Tokyo,

have English skills at the level of native speakers, and

those whose fees will be paid by employers participating in our Corporate

          Contribution Plan.

(These criteria are not listed in any given priority order.)

Interviews and Entrance Examinations

            Kindergarten Applicants

Kindergarten is offered on both ASIJ campuses: at the Early Learning Center in Roppongi and
at our K-12 campus in Chofu. Parents of kindergarten applicants are asked to indicate the
campus of their choice when applying. If no preference is indicated, kindergarten placement
may be made at either campus at ASIJ’s discretion. Applicants with siblings enrolled or
concurrently applying to the Chofu campus will be given priority consideration for the Chofu
kindergarten, unless parents specifically indicate their desire for placement at the Roppongi
campus.

After initial review of kindergarten application documents, qualified kindergarten applicants
may be invited to ASIJ for readiness and developmental screening.

            Applicants to Grades 1-12

There is no general entrance examination. Some applicants may be required to participate in
academic and/or English screening prior to an admissions decision. Similarly, there is no
general interview requirement, except when specifically requested prior to an admissions
decision.

Requirements

Required Admissions Documentation

A completed application, with all supporting documents, is required before an applicant is considered for admission. In some cases, follow-up discussions with parents, present or past teachers or school administrators/counselors may be conducted in order to determine an accurate assessment of an applicant’s credentials. (Please note that a separate admissions process is required for applicants to the Early Learning Center.)

The ASIJ Chofu Admissions Application Package requires the following:

Application for Admission

Complete and official transcripts for high school students or report cards for elementary and middle school students detailing the student’s subject areas and grades for the current school year and at least the past three years (reduced proportionately for grades 1–3).
• For kindergarten and first grade applicants, any pre-school and kindergarten reports are required.
• For applicants with home schooling experience, a detailed curriculum and achievements/grades for that period must be submitted. Standardized test scores are also required.

Recent Standardized Achievement Test results (for example, Iowa Test of Basic Skills, Educational Record Bureau, Terra Nova, SAT, PSAT)
Confidential Recommendations
• For kindergarten applicants, one (1) confidential recommendation completed by the pre-school teacher(s) is required.
• For elementary school applicants (grades 1-5), two confidential recommendations completed by two different people who know the student well in academic areas (current or past year homeroom teacher(s), counselor(s), and/or principal(s)) are required.
• For middle school and/or high school applicants (grades 6-12), two confidential recommendations completed by two different people who know the student well in academic areas (current or past year teacher(s) of core subjects, academic advisor(s), counselor(s), and/or principal(s)) are required.
Health History with immunization records

In addition, a Certificate of Examination completed by a medical physician, will be required prior to enrollment. Students must have this form completed to be eligible for practice and/or try-outs for ASIJ sports activities. This certificate is not required as part of the application package.

Applications will not be considered for decisions until all required forms and supporting documents have been received by the Office of Admissions. It is the responsibility of the applicant’s family to ensure that all documents have been received. Click here to download and print an application form.

Admissions Decisions

Admissions decisions for September enrollments are made from February through August of the preceding academic year. For enrollment during an academic year, decisions are made once an application is complete and are based on space availability, requirements for admission and the factors discussed earlier in this document.

Following an admissions review of an application (and interview and/or testing, if applicable), applicants are informed of their status via written notification in one of the following four categories:

Accepted: The applicant is accepted for admission to ASIJ and a space is reserved for him/her in a particular grade level. Along with a formal letter of acceptance, families will receive a Confirmation of Enrollment and form to complete in order to hold the space offered.

Denied: The applicant does not meet ASIJ eligibility and requirements for admission. Each year some applicants are denied admission 1) on the basis of their academic and/or behavioral records, 2) when their English language proficiency is not commensurate with the grade to which they are applying, or 3) when ASIJ lacks a program to meet the applicants' needs.

Deferred: Deferrals are given when, in the judgment of admissions personnel, a fair and accurate decision on the qualifications of the applicant cannot be reached without an on-site interview and/or assessment. A place will be temporarily reserved for the applicant pending the required interview. In the case of applicants with special needs, a deferral will be made until ASIJ testing/screening can be conducted.

Wait Pool: If an applicant meets ASIJ admissions requirements but is applying for enrollment in a grade level that is full, that applicant will be placed in the wait pool for his/her grade level for that particular school year. Parents of wait-pooled candidates will receive written notification regarding the likelihood of admission during that school year. Because of the school’s priority system, a student’s position in the wait pool may change if there are subsequent applications from families with higher priority, based on the factors considered for an admissions decision.

Once it is determined that space will not be available during the requested school year, parents are notified, and a candidate interested in applying for the following year must reapply by updating his or her application. It is important that an applicant in a wait pool explore other educational alternatives while awaiting a decision from ASIJ.
