Founded in 1953, this international Early Learning Center (ELC) has provided
many children's first experience with a full-day, full-week educational
program. With this in mind, the faculty at the ELC takes special care to
provide an inviting, safe, and stimulating environment for children three
through six years old to learn and grow.
To make these initial school experiences happy and successful, the ELC program introduces age-appropriate activities and materials that are both engaging and challenging. The teachers employ a learning approach that focuses on children's interests, combined with teacher input/direction, as the basis for study.
The ELC Faculty: Qualified teachers bring to
the ELC classroom a wealth of experience in the field of early childhood
education. Additionally, the faculty draws on its international background to
create a truly unique and exciting learning environment. Each class is taught
by two teachers: a native English-speaking certified teacher and an assistant
teacher. A full time music educator provides a rich music and movement
experience for the children. A speech and language pathologist/learning
support specialist works with children who have specific needs in these areas
and conducts a portion of the language/phonemic awareness program.
Each classroom
contains learning centers which can be adjusted for the project or unit that is
being studied. A separate community room is available for physical education. Students visit the
excellent school library to check out books.
The music program is carried out in the music room.
A Parent Library and a Video Library are available, as well.
Currently there are two Nurseries, (18 children/room) three Pre-Kindergarten, (20 children/room) and three Kindergarten classrooms (22 children/room).
The Program: The
At the ELC, young children have many opportunities to acquire knowledge through direct sensory encounters with the world, as well as through teacher-directed learning. The curriculum accommodates the children’s different learning styles and developmental needs, thus the children gain a sound base of experiences, engage in activities that foster strong self-esteem, and have their curiosity and excitement for learning piqued.
Play is valued
and supported in our program, as it is a child's natural way of learning. ELC teachers
employ the Project Approach (see Project Approach page on this website) In each project, children are
encouraged to explore, manipulate, create, dismantle, and construct /
reconstruct materials in the environment.
Their cognitive and social development is encouraged through
collaboration with others, discussion, and through discovering how to apply
their learning. The children have experiences in the large group, small groups,
and individual learning.
The faculty at
the ELC shares the following primary goals: to support the development of
happy, independent children, who have strong self-esteem, who trust and respect
adults, and who will grow into socially and emotionally mature individuals.
(See ELC Goals page on this website)

Admission Policies: Because the school program is conducted in English, the
child's primary care giver must have good command of the English language if the child is
not a native English speaker. Children should be toilet trained and must be at
least three years old by September 1. Application for the following school year
begins October 1. Application Forms can be obtained online.
Your child's annual physical examination report should be submitted to the
school.
