Facts
Leif
Erikson was born in the year 980. Even if he was born in Iceland he was a
Vikings. Sometimes people called him Leif the Lucky. Leif's father was Eric the
Red. Leif didn't always live with his family. When he was 8 he lived with
Thyrker a German. But when he was 12 he moved back with his family. Leif and his
friends watched ships come into the harbor. They also listened to the sailors
tales. Leif became a Christian after his father became one. Leif became a
Christian in Norway. Leif also
comverted people to become a Christian.
Major
Achievements
At age 19, Leif, went off on his first
voyage on his own. He had to go to Norway because his father always said that
his first voyage had to be to Norway because he is a Norwegian. When Leif came
back he brought back traders for his father. About 999 Leif sailed to Iceland
and then to Norway where he became a Christian. When Leif went south and west he
found a place were grapes were growing. Later, Leif called it Vineland (or wine
land) and now what we think this is called Newfoundlands. People don't think
that Leif was the first to go to North America. Well, Christopher Columbus
wasn't born in the year 980. But now people think that Chinese were the first to
go to North America. I think it remains as a mystery.
Country
The
three major Viking countries are Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Vikings moved to
Greenland because of the over control population. Eric the Red was the first to
go to Greenland. When he came back he took his family and 25 boats of settlers
to live in Greenland.
Impact
on the New World
Religion was very
important to the Vikings. They worshiped many gods. The important ones were
Odin, Thor, and Frey. Odin was king of all Norse gods and goddess. Also the king
of battle and death. Wednesday was the day to worship Odin. Thor was ruler of
the sky. He was the god of lightening, thunder, rain, storms, and wind. He was
popular because of his great power that effected the peoples lives. Thursday was
named after Thor. Frey was god of agriculture and love. He created which couples
should go together and which should not. Vikings like to fight. Warriors were
bold, adventurous, and fear less. They murdered women, children, and men. Some
people think the Vikings were normal people but they aren't. They're wild and
fearless after eating certain mushrooms and other foods that have drugs in them.
Personal
Reaction
I
think Leif Erickson was a good person because he didn't hurt anyone on his
voyage and he was truthful to his country. I think Leif and I have things in
common. One thing is that we both have Norwegian blood. And we both were not
born in Norway. But later on in Leif's life he went to Norway. When I am a
teenager I want to go to Norway.
