Bio facts

I researched Francisco De Coronado. He was born in Salamanca, Spain in 1510. The country that he was exploring for was Spain. He died in 1554. His parents didn't find out about his death until 2-3 years after he died.

Major Achievements

Coronado explored New Mexico and through Arizona. Some of the people that went with Coronado, left him because they weren’t having a lot of success, so they went their separate way but they also found nothing. Coronado and his men were the first people in the Rio Grande valley.  Coronado's first major achievement was to find the seven gold cities and bring the gold back to his country. Coronado has two very good friends that helped him on his expedition. They were Marcos de Ninza, and Cabeza de Vaca. After Coronado and his men left he decided that they should split into 4 groups so if someone finds the gold cities they will come back and tell him and they will find the gold.  The 4 groups would also have sub leaders so Coronado wouldn't have to lead 4 different groups. The first group marched toward the Colorado River. The second group marched towards the Hopi pueblos north of Zuni. The leader was Pedro del Tovar. The third group went with Coronado and his group because they were all teachers and priests that didn't have a leader.

  Country

The country that Coronado was exploring for was Spain.  He explored through five different states. They are, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico.  His main goal was to find the seven gold cities, with gold in them, but he did not complete it. The reason why he explored was because Spain wanted more land and they sent off over 150 explorers to find land that Spain could claim, and name it after the explorer, but many explorers failed.

Impact on the New World

Coronado led the European people to what is now southwestern United States. He also found many interesting landmarks. He was the first European to find the Grand Canyon. Coronado talked Indians into being part of his army. And a lot of them came and he got a very large army. Several Indians and servants came with their wife’s and children. A few missionaries and priests came along with the expedition, too.

  My Personal Reaction

I think that my explorer was a great person. He was very nice to the Indians and he was very supportive to everyone and he helped a lot of people. He helped the Indians by trading with them and maybe every once in a while he would give up some of his most prized positions.

I AM GLAD THAT MY PERSON WAS AN EXPLORER!
