Giovanni da Verrazzano

  Biographical Facts

    Giovanni da Verrrazzano was born in Tuscany, Italy.  He was born in 1485 and he died an awful death in 1528.  He was born in his family’s castle, Catello Verrazanno near Florence.  He was lucky to have received an excellent education.  In 1523 King  Francois, from France asked Giovanni da Verazzano to lead his expedition.  His brother was Girolamo da Verrazzano.  He was a mapmaker.  They worked as a team until his awful death.  He was killed by unfriendly cannilistic Caribs.  They ate him fresh in front of his brother.

  Major Achievements

            Giovanni da  Verrazzano contributed many things to history. One of the expeditions was 1523, and he was given two ships from King Francis. He went on this expedition to find the west ward passage to Asia. He had many discoveries. Three of them are Block Island, Narragansett Bay and New York Bay.  The order he made these discoveries was on January 17, 1524 he left Madeira, Spain and  arrived at Cape Fear on March 1.  Next he sailed to New York and then to Maine, and then New Foundland, Canada and returning to Europe on July 7. Verazzano made two more voyages the last one led to h is death.

Country

    Giovanni da Verrazzano was born in Italy but, sailed for France.  He sailed under the rein of King Francis who loved everything Italan.  This was the reason he chose Verrazzano to leaed the expedition of France.  His vessel was named  La Dauphine.  The meaning of this is the eldest son of the the king.

Impact on the New World

      Giovanni da Verrazano had impact on the new world in many ways.  First he tried trading with the Wampanoags and other tribes.  Some of the tribes did not welcome him.  He is believed to have kidnapped a young boy failing to kidnap a young woman which is believed to be in the area of Kitty Hawk , North Cairolina.  He had many difficulties on his voyages.  He was the first European to enter New York bay.  The bridge that spans from the entrance of New York hardor  and joins Staten Island and Brooklyn is the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.  There is also the Verrazzano Monument Battery Bark in New Yor

Personal Reaction

            I think that Giovanni da Verrazano was a good leeder but treated the natives badly.  I think his job takes a very strong and determined person and I think he was both of those.  I think the discoveries these explores made are like “finding a needle in a haystack.”  I think he was a smart  and a great navigator.
