Starting Up Before the laptops are used by the students at the beginning of the academic year, each homeroom teacher (both grades 4 and 5) spend a couple weeks simulating the use of laptops with dictionaries. They go through the activities they would do with a laptop with the dictionaries. The idea is to let students experience some of the dynamics of having a laptop in the classroom, on a desk, moving them from one cart to another and from one classroom to another. Through the process kids get an opportunity to discuss the importance of the responsibility of working with a laptop, issues of team work and managing portable technology in their school day. This whole process of care becomes a critical learning process for each student and teacher, as new set of behaviors, movement, expectations, and storage issues become part of the day.
