3. Selecting
Identify information needed within a resource.
Select information and take notes in your own words.

 

Activities

 

· Model scanning information for text clues and picture clues.
· Guide students in locating resources.
· Review key words and phrases which can be used to identify important information on chosen topic.
· Model note taking process to students.
· Students will create their own notes using their keywords and phrases on note cards or the computer

· Search Engines: Hierarchal and Directory search engines (Yahooligans, Kidsclick, Google)
· Keyword Strategy
· Synonyms, Board search words, narrow search words
· Text and Picture clue strategy

· Scanning for text clues, using word highlighter.

· Use the table of contents and indexes in books.
· Scan for information.
· Carefully read information and take notes.
· Read charts and examine pictures and captions.
· Identify visuals for possible scanning.
· Compare book resources to internet resources and examine for bias and contradictory information.
· Compile a bibliography in correct format
