A Bird Tale
By: Maura Glovins
Noami slouched out of bed and groaned. “Here comes another horrible day”, he grumbled to himself. Noami crept to the sink to wash his beak. Then he stared into the mirror. Another black eye, that’s the sixth this week.” Noami said with surprise. After he munched on some fish sticks, Noami stumbled out the door and went on his morning walk.
As he trudged along, he saw a figure coming his way. It could only be Felix, the neighborhood bully. “Where do you think you’re going, squirt.” He said as Noami bumped into him. “I’m going on my wa-walk.”, Noami said with a shaky voice. “Oh no you aren’t.”, Felix said. Then he gave Noami a punch in the stomach, and a big kick that sent Noami soaring back to his nest.
Noami stayed in his nest for the rest of the day. “How can a bird live his life like this?” Noami asked himself. Then he thought up a plan. “I’ll fight him!” Noami said feeling brave. “That’s what they do in all the movies.”
The next morning, Noami went on his walk. As he jogged along, he purposely walked right into Felix. “Hey look, a bug.” Felix chuckled. “I’m not scared of you.” Noami said and kicked him in the shin. “Oh so you are trying to fight me.”, said Felix. “You got it all wrong shrimp, I fight you.”, and with that Felix punched Noami all the way back to Noami’s nest.
When Noami pulled himself together, he thought of another idea. “I’ll tell!” he said. “That’ll show him.”
So the next day, Noami went on his morning walk. He purposely bumped right into Felix again. “If you beat me up, I’ll tell!” Noami said with no fear at all. Then Felix came closer, and over towered Noami. “Do you really want to do that, munchkin?” growled Felix with his mean bully voice. “N-n-n-n-n-no.” said Noami as his hair stood on end. After Noami said that, Felix gave Noami a giant booming upper cut that made Noami run sobbing all the way back to his nest.
“There has to be another way.” Noami said to himself. He thought, and thought, and thought. “Aha!” he finally said. “A race!”
It was morning, and Noami went on his again. He trotted up to Felix with excitement. “I challenge you to a race.” Noami said feeling as confident as ever. “You, challenge me, to a race?” Felix laughed. “O.K. then, what’s in it for me?” Felix asked. “If I win, you can never bully me, ever.” Noami said. “Aaaaaaannnd?” Felix said impatiently. “If you win, you can bully me forever.” said Noami.
Two hours later, Noami and Felix were at the starting line. “I’m going to beat you so bad, pipsqueak.” said Felix. “Ready, set… GO!” yelled the judge. Felix zipped off in a flash, but Noami wasn’t that far behind him. Felix leaped over rocks and dove under a small cave. Noami did the same, but he was falling behind. “See you at the finish line, tweep.” Felix hollered. Felix was almost at the finish, but then something caught his eye. “Hello handsome,” he said gazing at his reflection in a puddle. “You’re very buff, strong, and muscular.” Noami caught up, and he just passed Felix. “You’re the perfect bully.” he said, but just then he remembered the race. He sprinted across the finish line, but it was too late. “I win, I win!” said Noami with joy. “Now I won’t be bullied anymore!”
Since Noami won, all the birds through a party for him to congratulate him. One bird held his class of Salmon juice high in the air, so all the birds could see it. “To the winner!” he cheered. “To the winner.” applauded the other birds. Then everyone partied through the night.
Meanwhile, Felix sat on the ground and sobbed. “I lost.” he cried. “I lost to a wimpy little bird. Now I have no one else to bully.” He looked down. “At least I have you.” he said looking down at his reflection in the puddle. Felix never bullied Noami again.
