The Fishing
Day
Ava Hall 4R
I woke up knowing that today was going to be a great day. Why? Because today is the FISHING DAY! My Grandpa Hoppa, my brothers, Mason and Aidan and I were heading out on Gull Lake to catch some fish. The morning was really beautiful with the sun sprinkling down rays of sunshine on all of us. As I looked at the world today I had a couple of words to describe it, beauty, peace, life and grace. When we got to the fishing boat after a short walk we met our guide, Tim. He was very nice and welcoming. We got in his boat and all jumped for the same seat at the back in order to get a nice and perfect view. As we started out across the water, the sunshine made rainbows in the spray and they splashed all across my face.
Then it was time to start fishing. “Finally!” The word burst out of my mouth as if shot by a cannon. I was really embarrassed. Then, as we started fishing, Grandpa Hoppa said, “whoever catches the first fish gets a dollar, whoever catches the biggest fish gets a dollar and whoever catches the most fish gets a dollar.” I thought it was a bit cheap, but it was about the competition, so it was fair.
My brother Aidan got to sit in the back chair and I sat on one on the side of the boat. I was right next to the stinky bait fish that smelled worse than stinky gym socks locked up in a locker, that haven’t been washed for like, 10 weeks! Blaugh!!! Then I felt a light pull on my line. I reeled it in and caught a Rock fish, a Rocky. “Yes!” I screamed, “I get a dollar for the first fish”. Then I caught my second and then my third and soon enough, I had caught 7 fish. They were mostly Rock fish, but I also caught a couple of walleye.
We kept on moving to different places on the lake. Throughout the day Mason caught 3 fish and Aidan caught 4. Mason came up to me and begged to sit in my seat, the hot seat. I said No, but he begged and begged, saying it was only for one catch. I said “Okay, but just for one”. Believe it or not, after a couple of minutes he caught a fish. I said, “Okay, now time to move”. He begged for more, but Hoppa said “a deal is a deal”, and kicked Mason out.
Now we were on a different side of the lake. The sun was shining down and it was so beautiful that I put my rod down to enjoy it. Then I heard a loud “screech!” I quickly grabbed my rod and started reeling. This was definitely a big one! My tenth fish of the day was a monster. “I got it!” I screamed as I our guide scooped up the fish with the net. This was no Rock fish; this was a 25 inch Northern Pike. It weighed 6 pounds! No wonder it felt so big on my line.
That day I won 3 dollars for getting the first fish, the most fish and the biggest fish (I won that one by a landslide). We went to this little area where you pay and Tim, our guide, said “Oh yeah, you caught the Northern Slam.” That is a Rocky, a Walleye and Northern Pike. Now at Maddens, the lodge where we stayed, you can see my picture hanging on the wall.
This awesome day became even more awesome, because I was the first person at Maddens to catch a Northern Slam. Me, a nine year old girl! What a great day.
