Library Classes Grade 4 -
Grade 5

As a new project this year, and by request of the students themselves, kids in grades 4 and 5 have one scheduled library classes every three cycles. Activities include story times and games focused on refreshing library skills first taught in grades k-3.
Other than these lessons grades 4 and 5 have a flexible library schedule. This means that the grade 4 and 5 teachers book in library times as they are needed for the curriculum purposes.
During class time, students in these grades focus mostly on doing research projects. On these, there is much common planning between the homeroom teacher, technology teacher (Mr. Moody) and librarian (Mr. Laleman). Together they work out complementary and reinforcing strategies that will best meet the information literacy needs of our students.
When researching in the library, students are split up in small groups that work under the supervision of adults. A typical research cycle will encompass five library visits. On the first four days, students rotate between four stations: non-fiction books, internet, reference and magazines. Students find information and take notes according to the standards set forward by the homeroom teacher. Proper bibliography writing is taught and applied. Day five is when students can revisit those information resources that were most useful.
