Futons
by Emily
Japanese beds are called futons. Futons have no
bed frame. People put their futons on the floor to sleep. Futons
are cotton-filled mattresses. A futon has two parts called
shikibuton (the quiltlike mattress part) and kakebuton (the thick
quilted bedcover part). In the morning people put their futons
away in the cupboard because they must be aired frequently to
prevent mildew during the hot summers. Sometimes they have to be
hung out in the sun to dry. Sometimes when people get married
they get a beautiful futon as a present. Today some city families
have replaced their futons with beds.
