In Japan tsuru is the name for large birds. They have long necks and legs. Japanese cranes do a mating dance at Kushiro Marsh in Hokkaido. The Tancho Zuru is mainly white with red on parts of the neck and wings. Cranes live in Hokkaido. In Hokkaido there is about 200 cranes living there. The Nabe Zuru is mainly gray. They live in ricefarms, farmlands and fields. The Mana Zuru is light gray. They have red legs. When cranes are sleeping or resting, their legs get very cold. They fold one of the legs into their feathers to keep warm. They won't lose their body temperature when they fold one of their legs into the feathers. When it is a snowy day cranes often sleep in the river with one legs. The river is warmer than the snow so cranes sleep there. Some people use cranes in their story like the Paper Crane, Crane Wife and The Crane. Some people make a crane out of a kind of vegetable called daikon. In crane stories cranes have good luck or happiness in the end of the story. Cranes are pretty. I like cranes.
