Mountains, lakes, and other land make Hokkaido a place of beauty. Mountains that have forests cover most of the land. There are mountains with forests and hills. The land covers about 78,073 square miles. In kilometers Hokkaido covers about 83,500 square kilometers. It covers more than 20 % of Japan's land area.
