interesting facts about Hokkaido?
Hokkaido
covers 78,073 sq. miles. In the winter it is 3 Celsius in cold
months. Sea foods like scallops and konbu (kelp)
are caught in large amounts. Hokkaido's population is 5.7
million. In the summer Hokkaido 's normal temperature is twenty
Celsius. Some of the worlds most important fishing grounds are
found in Hokkaido. Hokkaido is the second largest island.
Hokkaido only has 5% of the population of Japan. Hokkaido only
has one prefecture. Besides all the Ishikari waters, the Tesho
river and theTokashi river also waters Hokkaido. Going out from
the hilly hook shaped piece of land lies Volcano bay. To the
north-east lies the Ishikara plain. Other plains lie to the
southern and eastern coasts of the island. It is very cold from
September to March, but the summers are comfortable, unlike the
rest of Japan. The easiest to get to Sapporo from Tokyo is by
plane. It is a trip of 875 km , takes about an hour and a half
and costs somewhere around 24,000 (240 American dollars).
Sapporo's best sports equipment spaces have had the Olympics,
Winter Asian games and the Winter Univeride. Hokkaido is
connected to Honshu by a under-sea tunnel. Sapporo is the 5th
largest city in Japan. Sapporo had the Winter Olympics in 1972.
In 1868 the government changed the name of Ezo (now Hokkaido) to
Hokkaido. There are less than 20,000 Ainu left in Hokkaido and a
super small amount in Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku.
