FOOD CHAIN

Green peace made a warning that melting sea ice caused by global warming will shrink the production of algae, important to the arctic food chain, threatening fish, seals and polar bears. Plants are the building block of life. If all the plants died, then all the herbivores would die. When all the herbivores die, all the carnivores would die and then everything would die! Food chain #1: humans eat wolf, wolf eats fox, fox eats ptarmigan, lemming, and hare, hare, lemming and ptarmigan eat plants.

FUR

Musk ox have very long fur outside that keeps in heat to keep the animal warm and dry. The under fur is packed together and lots of fat is under the skin to keep it warm. Polar bears outer fur is hollow so it can trap heat. Caribou have a water proof coat of fur and they also have hollow fur like the polar bear. Wolves have a two layered fur coat with packed together, soft fur underneath and long hair outside to keep out the cold. Arctic foxes have fur inside and outside for more warmth. The arctic foxes' paws have fur under to stop from sinking in snow.

FOX

In summer, the arctic foxes get thinner coats of fur and it's brown instead of white, covering most of the body but the belly usually stays white. These colors blend in with the rocks of the tundra, making the fox hard to see so it can sneak up on other animals to eat, such as lemmings, without being seen. The fox stores food under rocks in the summer and comes back to eat it in the winter months when food is hard to find. Arctic foxes have a varied diet. They eat berries, dead animals, garbage, birds and their eggs.
