Polar Bear
Polar bears live in treeless, icey wastelands of the Arctic. They weigh about 680 kilograms and are about 11 feet tall! It camouflages in the snow with its white fur. It has fur on its feet so it won't slip on ice. A polar bear has lots of blubber for keeping warm. Female polar bears give birth to 1-4 babies at a time. It eats walrus, seals, fish, beached whales and caribou. Cubs are born midwinter in the den. Only about a month after birth, cubs can hunt.
Ptarmigan
Ptarmigans have feet that act like snow shoes. Ptarmigans camouflage with their white feathers. They feed on twigs, berrys and buds. Ptarmigans change color in summer. In 1955, children chose ptarmigans as Alaska's emblem. Now, ptarmigans are the state bird. In winter, some ptarmigans fly inland while other birds fly to various places in Alaska and Canada. Ptarmigans dig for plants in the dirt and snow. In winter, ptarmigans turn white to camouflage with the snow and in summer they turn patchy brown to camouflage with rocks and grass.
Pingo
A pingo is a huge dome of land with an ice core. Plants sometimes grow on pingos. To make a pingo, trapped water freezes and makes a hill by expanding. Most pingos are 300 feet tall. Pingos are also called snow heaves. The tallest pingo is 1,000 feet tall.
