How the Cecropia Tree is Used
By Laura (last name withheld by request)

The cecropia tree is used in many ways. For instance, the Yanomami natives who are from Brazil use the tree fibers from the cecropia tree to make their bow strings. Then they use their bows and arrows to shoot animals such as peccaries, agoutis, tucans, deer and capybara.

The Amazon natives carve trumpets from the cecropia's hollow, light-weight trunks. They use the trumpets to communicate with neighbors that live far away.

The cecropia's leaves are covered with long, soft, tangled hairs called tomentum, which cause a rash if you are not careful and touch them. The rash that the tomentum causes is itchy.
