Tatami mat by Joshua
In most Tokyo homes the floors are covered with thick straw mats called tatami. Tatami comes in a size about 3 feet by 6 feet. Traditional Japanese furniture are low and simple. Tables stand only a few inches high. At meals everyone sits on the fioor. At bedtime light mattresses or futons are folded down from closets. In the winter rooms can grow very cold.
