Momotaro

ももたろう

Grandpa goes to the woods to chop. Grandma goes to the river to wash clothes. While Grandma is washing clothes, a big peach comes floating down the river. Surprised, Grandma takes the peach home. She shows Grandpa when he gets home. "Lets cut it open and eat some," said Grandpa. Grandpa got his big axe and starts cutting the peach. Grandma and Grandpa heard a cry from inside the peach. Grandpa cut slowly. When Grandpa got to the middle, out came a little baby! They called him Momotaro or Peach Boy.

Momotaro grew up very strong. One day he said to Grandma and Grandpa, "I want to go fight the Onies (ogres) who take our money, food and possessions." Grandma and Grandpa knew that they could not stop him.

When the day came for him to leave, Grandma made him some odango's (dumplings) and Grandpa gave him an axe.

When Momotaro entered the forest he saw a dog. The dog said, "Momotaro, where are you going?" "I'm going to fight the terrible onies," replied Momotaro. "I will come with you if you give me one of your odango's," said the dog. So Momotaro gave the dog an odango. A little farther into the forest, he saw a pheasant. The pheasant said, "Momotaro, where are you going?" Momotaro replied, "I am going to fight the terrible onies. "I will come with you if you give me one of those odango's," said the pheasant. So Momotaro gave the pheasant an odango. They got towards the end of the forest when a monkey came along. The monkey said, "Momotaro-san, where are you going?" "I am going to fight the terrible onies," replied Momotaro. "I will go with you if you give me one of those odango's," said the monkey. So Momotaro gave the monkey an odango. いぬと、きじと、さるとが、おだんごをもらって、ももたろうに、ついていきました。

When Momotaro, the dog, the pheasant and the monkey got to the onie's castle, Momotaro made a plan and in they ran! The dog bit the onies ankles, the pheasant pecked the onies eyes and head, and the monkey scratched and pulled the onies horns and Momotaro slashed and hacked the onies with the axe. Finally the onies gave up and ran away. Momotaro and his brave friends returned to the village with everybody's possessions and lots of gold and jewels. They all lived happily ever after.
