Sumi-e

Sumi-e is called ink pictures or water ink painting. The paintings came from China. They use water on an inkstone. The inkstone makes the water all black. Water ink painting can also be called sumi-e. They can use paper or silk for ink painting as well. When some one would leave the zen monk's temple, they would make a painting and give it to the person who was leaving as a farewell gift. These are the tools that you use for water painting…Suzuri: inkstone, suzuri-bako: box for inkstone and utensils, sumi: India inkstick, suzuri-no-umi: hollow in inkstone, fude oki: brush rest, suiteki (Suichu): water dopper, bunchin: paperweight, fude: brush, hanshi: calligraphy paper.
