TEMPLE AND SHRINES

Temples and shrines may look the same but they are different. They each have the two religions.Shrines have the Shinto religion.Temples have the Buddhist religion.Most holidays people go to temples and shrines to pray. During New Years people walk to temples and shrines to ring bells and gongs. At shrines you ring bells. At temples you ring gongs. Buddhism originally came from China in the sixth century. When you get married in Japan, you usually have a Shinto ceremony. Usually shrines are much smaller than temples. The word Shinto means the way of spirts. Shintoists believe these natural spirits or kami live in trees, mountains, volcanoes and other natural places.They are called kamisama. A jinja is a shinto shrine.Visitors to the shrine pass through torii which are tall wooden gates.
