Sumo Tournament
2002 |

| There were many highlights to the day,
however, three really stand out in Coach Harrits' mind. The opening match
of Assaf's was long and hard, setting the spirit of the ASIJ rikishi for
the day. Later, second grader, Kai Y. had a
two period bout which was very unusual but fun to watch. His
opponent really had to battle for that match. Then Doug D.B.'s spirited
match in the opening round of the championship bracket which resulted in a
mono-ii (judges conference and decision) and rematch that was just as
spirited. One final trip-throw by Doug's opponent made it look like it was
all over, but Doug managed to spin around and come out on top so he moved
on to eventually face Bobby A. for third and fourth place.
Overall it was certainly a stellar day for ASIJ Sumo rikishi, with everyone showing fine sportsmanship in the traditions of sumo. We had 17 students make it into the championship brackets, at least one in most of the grade level divisions. Best of luck to John S. and John B. as they practice and then participate in the all Tokyo tournament. Here is a list of the "place" finishers
