JFL IV Course Overview

Goal:                  You will integrate the language and cultural knowledge to communicate your personal perspectives of various topics.  A creative use of language with fluency and appropriateness will be encouraged.

 

Objectives:       In this course students will

                            1. enlarge vocabulary and Kanji, through selected reading and listening materials.

 

2. integrate complex sentence patterns, variety of language style and cultural knowledge through initiating and sustaining communicative tasks on a variety of daily life situations in Japan.

                                   

3. demonstrate cultural understanding and appreciation through written work, presentation, and/or participation in cultural programs.

                                                                                                                       

Grading system:    

1.  Listening and Speaking                                          50%

* skit, role-play, interview, presentation, song, video production, target language usage in the classroom, listening and oral quizzes and tests

 

                        2.  Reading and Writing                                                    40%

                        * worksheet, journal, essay, memo, letter, kanji, computer-generated

presentations and projects                                 

                       

3.  Others                                                              10%

                        * classroom participation, effort, group work, visual aides, etc.

 

* The final grade is based on the quarter grades (86%) and a final exam (14%).  Percentages will be used to determine a letter grade according to the Modern Language Department standard grading scale.

 

 

Homework/  1. You are expected to study about half an hour a day everyday.

Assignments: If there is no formal homework, you should review recent lessons.

                                   

2.  All assignments are due at the beginning of the class. Assignments turned in late will receive only a minimum passing grade of 60% (D-)

                                   

3.  Assignments due on the date of your absence are due immediately upon your return. 

 

Make-up:    It is a your responsibility to make an arrangement for make-up work after

being absent. All make-up work must be completed within two days after returning to school, unless specifically arranged otherwise.

 

Extra Credit: No extra credit assignment is available.

 

Expectations:          1. Come to the class on time and be seated.

                                   

2. Bring a positive attitude, as well as the materials you need to study; textbook, completed assignments, notebook, pencils, and erasers. 

                                               

                        3. Respect the learning environment, teacher, and fellow students.

 

4. Active oral participation and usage of Japanese are expected in the classroom.

 

                        5. No food, drinks, or chewing gum are allowed in the classroom.

                       

6. No hats, caps, sunglasses, cell phones, music players are allowed in the classroom.

                       

Violating any of the rules listed above will prevent you from receiving full participation points and effort grades.

 

Extra Help:  Extra help is available any time in the Modern Languages Resource Center or from your teacher by appointment.
