JNL 105 Course Overview

Format:              80 minutes every other day

Prerequisite:     JNL 104 or equivalent

 

Materials:          Kokugo (国語) by Mitsumura Tosho (光村図書) 

Supplemental materials prepared by the teacher.

 

Course work:          Course work will include:

²     Reading various different styles of prose

²     Discussion on various topics including current issues

²     Identifying and developing individual writing styles

²     Group projects such as making newspapers

²     Research paper writing

²     Debates, group discussions and oral presentations

²     Quizzes and tests

 

Objectives:       Upon completion of this course, students will have gained:

¨         an improved ability to read literary texts for appreciation.

¨         an improved aural and reading comprehension of expository texts.

¨         greater confidence in writing essays, summaries, commentaries and reports.

¨         an improved ability in formal use of Japanese in various situations.

¨         a large number of useful and advanced kanji compounds and vocabulary items.

¨         greater confidence in producing various documents using a computer.

 

EvaluationThe course grade is calculated based on:

                        Daily activities (quizzes, homework, etc)                    20%

Writing (essays, reports, projects, etc)                     35%

Tests (unit tests, projects, presentations, etc)                                    35%               
 
Effort (class participation, work ethic, attitude, etc)                          10%

                                   

The first semester grade is based on the average of the quarter grades (90%) combined with the semester exam (10%)

The second semester grade is based on the average of the quarter grades (86%) combined with the final exam (14%)

 

Homework/ Assignment:

·          All assignments are due at the beginning of class, and only in class. Late assignments will receive less credit.

·          Assignments due during your absence are due immediately upon your return. All make-up work must be completed within 2 days after your return, unless arranged otherwise. (It is a student’s responsibility to see the teacher to arrange for make-up of missed work).

           

Expectations & Rules:     

·          Come to class on time and be seated with a positive attitude, with all the necessary materials for study.

·          Respect the learning environment, teacher and fellow students.

·          Actively participate in class work.

·          No gum, food or drinks, other than water are allowed in the classroom.

·          All electronic devices such as cell phones and music players must be turned off and put away.

Rule violations will result in grade deduction.

 

Extra Credit: No extra credit assignment is available.

Extra help: Extra help is available in the Modern Language Resource Center or from your teacher by appointment.
