HEARD ON "THE O.C."

Youme A.

What draws so many viewers to Fox’s hit T.V. series The O.C.? Many are attracted to the frivolous Californian lifestyle, the icon-setting fashion styles, and of course, the drama between the hott protagonists. However these aren’t the only elements that keep The O.C. on top viewing charts. Many critics also commend the show’s audio success. Throughout the first season, producer Josh Schwartz began adding songs from his personal iPod as background music, “because in the earlier days, we couldn’t even afford a supervisor,” (Fox). The staff was impressed by the number of viewers downloading songs from respective episodes.

Music featured on The O.C. isn’t what you’ll find on mainstream Billboard charts. “We tend to gravitate towards indi artists and artists that, more than anything, just fit the picture and enhance the characters,” explains Alexandra Patsavas, the executive music supervisor who joined The O.C. crew from the second season. Every day, Patsavas receives about 300~400 submissions from a myriad of bands who are willing to contribute their music to the show. Artists such as Death Cab for Cutie, Jem, The Killers, and Modest Mouse have even appeared on the show as performing bands.

In response to the featured music’s increasing popularity, compilation CDs of songs heard on the show have been released after each season. Since then, “The O.C. Mixes” have become a huge component to “The O.C. feel”. The latest released mix includes music featured during significant moments on the show. “I think that's why the fans have reacted so well to the soundtracks, not only discovering the bands, but also remembering the big moments,” (Patsavas).
