GUEST SPEAKER: MR. CARL GETTINGER Youme A.
MODEL UNITED NATIONS 2nd KANTO PLAINS CONFERENCE Christine K. “Will the delegates please come to order?!” With three sound-numbing knocks on the gavel by the Chair, Seisen’s drama room became silent. Almost a hundred students from ASIJ, Seisen, YIS, and Sacred Heart gathered at Seisen to debate two resolutions – the improvement of women’s status in the United Nations system, and the emergency assistance for peace, normalcy, and reconstruction in war-stricken Afghanistan. The day began with students, each a delegate of an assigned country, splitting into their respective regions to decide on a resolution. After 30 minutes, all delegates reconvened at Seisen’s drama room for the General Assembly. Senior, Katherine H. was the first resolution debated was. Although the resolution did not manage to pass, but only by a slight margin, much heated debate aroused regarding the improvement of women’s status. As a co-submitter, Christina P. (12), answered many questions confidently despite this conference being her first one. During open debate, all other delegates intensely interrogated the co-submitters as well as questioned the General Assembly. Katherine H., being assertive and informative, and Nara L. (11), noted for her “point of parliamentary” comments regarding the rules of a Model UN conference, were presented with speaker awards. Overall, it was a productive day where all delegates gained a widened perspective of issues faced on the international scale. Good job to all MUN delegates and good luck to those attending the IASAS Model United Nations Conference 2005 in Manila this November.
VISITING ARTIST: PATZ FOWLE Those of you who had a chance to meet Patz Fowle Many students from elementary to high school joined Patz Fowle for claywork crafting sessions. A resident of South Carolina, Fowle uses clay and porcelain to sculpt animals with human characteristics. Her works include sculptures of animals driving cars, portraits of animals, and other unique aspects of art. This is Fowle’s first time visiting and international school. She and her husband enjoyed their trip to Tokyo very much and would like to visit here again. They saw Japanese food as “bizarre yet wonderful” as their particular favorites were ramen and maguro/toro sushi. The Fowles were very complimentary of Tokyo as a whole, commenting on its safety and impressive mass transit systems, and the polite and respectful manners of the Japanese people.

186,000 YEN RAISED FOR
HURRICANE VICTIMS
With yet another SAIL victory during the Hurricane Katrina Fundraiser Competition, the class of 2007 appears to take the lead again this year. Students raised a total of 186,000yen, with the junior class raising half of the total sum! Mrs. Lanier commented that the junior class just did a “phenomenal job!” The senior class finished second with 35,000yen while the sophomore and freshmen classes placed third and fourth, respectively. With so many devastated areas in need of help, SADD, together with SAIL, at this moment are trying to determine the final destination of the profits. We’ll just have to wait and see if the junior class’ enthusiasm will be kept throughout the year! Good job, class of 2007.
HARRY POTTER PARTY By Kara C. Are you mad about Harry? Members of the Library and Cyber Book Clubs are, and they gathered on Saturday, September 30th to celebrate the recently-released sixth Harry Potter book. Some students even dressed up for the occasion, donning Harry Potter sweaters and robes. Before entering the conference room where the party took place, students picked their houses out of the “Sorting Hat.” Houses then gathered together to compete for the house cup. Ms. Hayakawa, resembling Madame Hooch with her short hair and broomstick, sent the students on a scavenger hunt to find hidden pictures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione throughout the HS and MS buildings. Later, the group held a trivia contest. Ravenclaw won both events, earning candy and Harry Potter pencils as well as the house cup. Franziska R. (9) also won a doorprize, consisting of a “Beary Potter” bear with a wizard hat and a box of chocolate frogs. As with all book club parties, there was plenty of good food involved!
