Hakone
Hakone is the place to be for JUMP 2002 at The American School in Japan. Our first activity was Japanese wood craft near Hakone-Yumoto. From there we visited the forested Hakone Shrine and the Hakone Checkpoint dating back to the Tokugawa Shogunate of 1619. The evening was spent in a memorable and beautiful 200 year-old Ryokan (Japanese Inn), eating delicious Shabu-Shabu, soaking our bodies in natural hot springs and enjoying each others company in small groups in tatami bedrooms. The next day included Owakudani Valley, the old crater of Mt. Kamiyama Volcano filled with hot bubbling pools of black waters, and visiting the unique Hakone Open Air Sculpture Museum. Here we enjoyed the many acres of green grass with works of Picasso, Rodin, Moore, and others. This trip was a great way to spend a memorable night out with friends and be immersed in Japanese culture.
