Hiroshima:  Past and Present

ASIJ's 2002 JUMP trip to Himeji, Hiroshima, and Miyajima Island gave students a glimpse of Japan's history dating back to the 16th century.  The trip started by taking the  shinkansen (bullet train) to Hiroshima with a stop off at Himeji castle.  The centerpiece of the trip is a tour of Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and Museum, after which students met with a hibakusha (survivor of the atomic bomb blast).  While in Hiroshima students visited the Mazda Museum and the Shukkei-en garden. Prior to boarding the bullet train back to Tokyo students enjoyed Miyajima Island, Mt. Hisen's monkeys, and the "floating torii" gate at Itsukushima Shrine.
