Mashiko Pottery Club and Workshop

One of The American School in Japan's JUMP trips was to Mashiko village, a lovely mountain town known for it's unique pottery tradition. Students stayed in a traditional Japanese Minshuku with a pottery workshop on sight. They had an opportunity to learn about traditional Japanese pottery techniques, clay, and glazes by a renowned from the area and to have a hands-on experience with the materials in the workshop. Thursday upon  arrival they made a traditional piece of Mashiko pottery, bathed in an onsen and later that evening attempted Karaoke. Friday included a visit to the Hamada Museum. Shoji Hamada is a national treasure due to his contribution to the revival of Japanese folk pottery. Students  also had time to view hundreds of shops and galleries in Mashiko village. This was a trip for those interested in a hands-on craft experience as well as experiencing Japanese culture.
