Music in Okinawa
Music is an integral part of the Okinawan culture; everyone plays and sings. During The American School in Japan's JUMP trip to Okinawa students heard the island and ocean in the sound of both Ryukyu music and the exciting rock of today, a sound uniquely different than that of mainland Japan. After the instruction in Sanshin (a local instrument) and a snorkel at the beach, students joined professional recording artists to compose their own original song in a modern style. In the evening, they attended a concert in Naha. All students returned with a Kan Kan Sanshin instrument of their own a CD of the group's song, and great memories.
