Unzen & Nagasaki
On this JUMP trip through the American School in Japan students spent the first night at Unzen National Park, where they stayed at a Japanese Inn in the internationally known hot spring resort about 2 hours East of Nagasaki. Before arriving to Unzen they visited the Shimbara Castle that is associated with 1637 Christian rebellion. On the morning of the second day, they set off for Nagasaki. To gain their bearings they began with a harbor cruise followed by a visit the Peace Museum and listen to an A-bomb survivor. On the third day, students visited the old foreigners' sections of town; the areas where trade with the outside world was allowed when Japan was essentially a closed society.
