ASIJ alumna Mara Purl (class of 1968) visited the HS and MS from Nov. 1 - 8, 2005. Ms. Purl is a journalist, actress, writer, musician (the koto) and producer.

Ms. Purl attended Bennington College where she studied  literature, theatre and music. She then worked as a journalist and an actress (on "Days Of Our Lives").  She followed this up by writing her own radio drama, Milford-Haven USA, which was broadcast by the BBC.  Milford-Haven is now a series of novels, all of which are available in the HS Library. Ms. Purl also co-wrote the critically acclaimed Act Right - A Manual for the On-Camera Actor. 

Ms. Purl is very concerned with social issues, in particular the plight of battered women.  She works with Haven House, a
 domestic abuse shelter in Los Angeles. Together with her friend Erin Gray, Ms. Purl produced the award -winning "Step Forward - To Your Local Shelter, " a series of one-minute episodes of a serial drama on domestic violence for radio and internet.

 


 
While at ASIJ Ms. Purl conducted workshops for middle school and high school students.

Tenth grade students and theater students in the HS experienced a three session version of  S.T.A.R. – Student Theatre and Radio - during which they wrote and performed a radio script.  Middle School drama students did a two session workshop called Act Right, Act Wrong.  Ms. Purl also met with HS Digital Film students and the Writing for Publications class.

Ms. Purl performed excerpts from her one-woman show, Mary Shelley in Her Own Words, for students from the middle school and the entire high school student body on Friday, Nov. 4th during Activity Period.

There was also an opportunity for students, parents, faculty, and staff to speak to Ms. Purl  at a Meet the Author Party in the HS Library after school on Monday, November 7th.
