Harris Libraries Belief Statements

We believe that:

the Harris library system, indeed the entire American School in Japan, should support the ALA statements regarding  Freedom to Read and Intellectual Freedom, as well as the principles outlined in the Library Bill of Rights.
the size of a library media center's staff and collection is the best school predictor of academic achievement
the library is the intellectual backbone of the school
we should develop inquisitive learners by ensuring the effective use of accurate and up-to-date information
we should develop compassionate learners by ensuring the effective use of materials showing a variety of points of view and appealing to a variety of learning styles
we should develop learners prepared for global responsibility by ensuring the effective use of materials by and about different cultures and belief systems
we serve our students best by acting as community librarians, providing "public library services" to students, teachers, parents and staff
