Overview of the
Dewey Decimal System
000
Generalities (includes computers) Collections in the HS Library & Their Call Letters - F = FICTION: Fiction is found in the center of the library. The books are shelved alphabetically by the author's last name. 001 to 999 = NON-FICTION: Non-fiction is organized on moving shelves along the walls of the library. Books are shelved according to the Dewey Decimal number, followed by the author's last name, followed by the title. 700 to 789 Books on art, architecture and photography are shelved in the library lab. 92 = BIOGRAPHIES / 920 = COLLECTIVE BIOGRAPHIES: Biographies are found on the left hand side of the library after 999 on the sliding bookshelves. They are shelved alphabetically by the last name of person who is the subject of the book; thus, all books about George Washington are shelved together. Collective biographies are shelved under 920 by the author's last name. J = JAPANESE COLLECTION: The Japanese collection is on the left side of the library - after 999 and 92 on the sliding bookshelves. R = REFERENCE: Reference is found under the windows and in front of Mrs. Yoshii's office. DVD, CD, and TRC (tape recordings) are found in front of the 001 to 915.999 sliding shelves. PC = PROFESSIONAL COLLECTION LC = LIBRARY COLLECTION: The Professional and Library Collections are found in the sitting area near the entrance. MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS are shelved near the sofas
if they are new. Older magazines are kept for 3 years in the back of the
library (with the exception of National Geographic and Life Magazine. We
have issues of these from before WWII). Newspapers are kept for two
months and are then recycled. OVERSIZED BOOKS: Oversized books are shelved as close as possible to other books with the same Dewey number. They should be flat on the shelf (usually the bottom-most shelf).
