Biculturalism and the Japanese

Kenji Kushida '97 spoke to a
rapt audience at ASIJ on  September 20, 2006

It was a very successful presentation which was
followed by a reception
and book signing in the
HS library.

DVDs of the talk are on
sale in the HS library
for 1000 yen.

 

Mr. Kushida is currently a PhD candidate in Political Science at UC Berkeley and a Graduate Researcher at the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy (BRIE).

Mr. Kushida's book on bilingual
and bicultural children was published in Japanese by Chuo Koron Shinsho Rakure in 2006. 

The English title is
Biculturalism and the Japanese:
Beyond Linguistic Ability.
 
The Japanese title is
バイカルチャーと日本人:英語力プラスαを探る

His talk focused on bilingual people, particularly those who graduate from international schools, and considered the following points

  • The double insider and outsider perspective    
    and
  • Biculturalism as an intrinsic component of bilingualism
