The Golden Compass, by Philip Pullman

Welcome MOBsters,

The Golden Compass is a complex story. You made a very good choice.

What about those daemons? What sort of daemons might your friends, relatives or classmates have? Describe your own daemon.

Also, feel free to post your questions about the first part of the book, chapters 1-9.

Hey! Its good to be back. After I read the book, I wanted to have a daemon too. I think most of my friends will have a bold, challenging daemon. I will probably have that kind of daemon, too.

The author tells us that THE GOLDEN COMPASS takes place, "in a universe like ours, but different in many ways." How do you think Lyra's universe relates to ours?

I'm going to start on the first question just because I might as well since only one person has answered to it. I think that my daemon would be a shy creature but one that would "come out of it's shell" when it needed too. I think that most of my family members would have more of a forthcoming daemon that is often outgoing but my friends i think would be a mix, in the middle, not quite as shy as mine but not quite as outgoing as my family but my friends all have different personalities than eachother and me and so I find it hard to say what I think their daemon would be. On the second question, I think that in the first part of the book, the world Lyra and Roger are in is almost exactly like ours except that all of the people have daemons and the rules seem to be less strict. As in laws and houses and schools etc. But it seems that Lyra'S universe has many more worlds in it that people know about than ours. We may have many worlds in our universe but we don't know about them (not counting the other planets) Also, if you think of the other planets in our universe as worlds, they don't connect as easily as the worlds in Lyra's universe. Sorry if I've gone into The Subtle Knife a little bit now, but the world Lyra is in seems much more connected so that it doesn't seem as though there are different laws for every different country and there don't seem to be nearly as many countries. The world seems more united somehow.(as in it seems easier to get to places and other worlds.)
