Moderator's Question:
On Diagon Alley, witches and wizards shop at Quality Quidditch Supplies for
flying brooms, Ollivander's for wands, Flourish & Blott's for books, and the
Magical Menagerie for creatures. If you were going to open up your own store on
Diagon Alley, what would you call it and what would you sell?

It's great to be in the book club!
By Goldielocks (Goldielocks) on Friday, December 07, 2001 - 11:25 am:
I would open a travel agency, to help the kids get to and from school or vacation.
By Thegiver (Thegiver) on Monday, December 10, 2001 - 12:29 pm:
I would open a pizza shop because I know wizzards need pizza.
By Winter (Winter) on Monday, December 10, 2001 - 01:50 pm:
If I was suppose to open a shop I would most likely to sell Odds and ends. Sort of like a second hand shop that would have weird abnormal things. Know idea why but that is ok right? LoL! I would end up calling it the "Gadgets Aplenty"
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Monday, December 10, 2001 - 05:21 pm:
Good idea Goldielocks! Maybe the agents could use the magical ways of traveling to help the kids get back and forth when the Hogwarts Express is not in operation.
By A4angelik (A4angelik) on Monday, December 10, 2001 - 05:41 pm:
I just started reading the fourth book, but I thought the 1st one was the best...well actually second best 'cuz the third one is the best. And if I were to open a shop on Diagon Alley, it would have to be a hobbie shop...like tokyu hands..and I could have a lot of cool stuff in it...
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Monday, December 10, 2001 - 05:46 pm:
A4angelik--
I like Tokyu Hands too. A hobbie shop would be cool.
By Killtomato (Killtomato) on Monday, December 10, 2001 - 05:48 pm:
I agree maybe also a shop with artifacts and information about ancient witches and wizards
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Monday, December 10, 2001 - 05:50 pm:
That would be cool! Very educational.
By Killtomato (Killtomato) on Monday, December 10, 2001 - 05:51 pm:
yup, my sentiment exactly.

By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 - 09:39 am:
You guys, fans of HP--
If you want another message board like this about Harry Potter, go to
www.harrypotter.com . It is really neat but is not as good as this one.
By Goldielocks (Goldielocks) on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 - 12:28 pm:
Hey, I agree with 'Me', definitely a shop to help with homework. I also like the idea by KillTomatoe, about opening a shop with info. on ancient witches. What about a wax works museum, like Madame Tussades, with models of famous witches.
By Thegiver (Thegiver) on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 - 01:15 pm:
Harry, Hermione and the others at Hogwarts had homework and tests to deal with, too. Plus they had to learn spells. Shouldn't studying be easy for a wizard?
By Winter (Winter) on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 - 02:00 pm:
Why Should it be easier? I would think it would be harder with all those spells and stuff to memorise! The homework Idea is Great! I wish there was something like that for normal kids! LoL! :p
By Alanna (Alanna) on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 - 04:26 pm:
I would open a shop that had rare, ancient scrolls and magical objects because I find them very interesting. I think that I would call my shop "Lumos" because I like the sound of that magical name. "The Shop of Light" has a kind of ring to it, doesn't it, even though it doesn't really connect with the items I sell.
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 - 05:21 pm:
Winter, what do you mean by "I wish ther was something like that for normal kids"? Are you talking about the homework help thing? We have the HOT club in the NRC.
By Ticktock (Ticktock) on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 - 06:16 pm:
How 'bout a library? Sure, there's one at Hogwarts, but what about one for the other witches and wizards? I agree with KillTomatoe and Goldielocks too; I think a wax museum would be cool... How about a supermarket, with magical foods? That would be interesting
By Winter (Winter) on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 - 06:19 pm:
Fergus610, Your right but NRC does not have "magical" items (or any kinds of Items for that matter)that help you out. You do have Mrs. Erwin but she can't be there all the time! :P
By Hotstuff (Hotstuff) on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 - 08:24 pm:
i think i would open a store that was part libray and part book store so if u wanted to borrow a book you could do that and if you wanted to buy a book you could do that too.
By Soccer_King (Soccer_King) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 08:16 am:
If I could open a store I would sell supplies for quidditch.
By Equix (Equix) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 10:05 am:
Hey Soccer_King! What kind of supplies would you sell? Perhaps, you and "Gadgets Aplenty" can go into partnership together.
By Winter (Winter) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 12:22 pm:
Now that would be intresting
By Cinderella (Cinderella) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 04:20 pm:
I like the idea of the library! That sounds cool...I mean it's be good for the young witches and wizards who aren't old enough to go to Hogwarts yet!
By Cinderella (Cinderella) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 04:20 pm:
Sorry, *it'd*.....LOL
By Frizzy_One (Frizzy_One) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 04:27 pm:
I would open a magical pet/cafe store. That is where you can buy magical pets and also take your pets and get lunch or a snack.
By Killtomato (Killtomato) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 06:42 pm:
It might also be fun to have a magical apothicary. There'd be all kinds of magical substances and would be fun to run. Or a magical appliance shop.
By Tom_Riddle (Tom_Riddle) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 07:50 pm:
i would make a place, or shop, whichever you would like to call it, where it has absolutly EVERYTHING!! and i mean it, too. there would evern be a place where 1st years at hogwarts and younger ppl to play quidditch. make sense?
By Tom_Riddle (Tom_Riddle) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 08:01 pm:
well, i now change my mind. i am gonna make it only a place where EVERYONE can play quidditch. (of course there would be padding on the sides and stuff incase anyone falls.) :P
By Hotstuff (Hotstuff) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 08:26 pm:
I agree with "ME". the hw thing is totally cool. You would get a lot of buisness and money.
By Cinderella (Cinderella) on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 - 09:48 pm:
If the homework thing were in Diagon Alley, it wouldn't help much; they'd only get help with homework over the summer! So...what would be the good of it?
By 247reader (247reader) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 08:28 am:
I agree with Cinderella. A homework thing would be good but who would go to it in Diagon Alley since everyone is in school for the entire year and it would have to be on the school grounds if there was one because students aren't allowed outside the grounds. Also, in reply to Tom Riddle, if a quidditch ground was open to everyone, you'd have way to many people on the pitch at once unless you had a bunch of pitches or you organized games or something. Also, if it was open to everyone, even the people who couldn't fly very well would come and then you'd have a disaster and there wouldn't actually be much of a game going on. Also, more people would learn to fly and then first years would be able to get onto the quidditch teams a lot more and there wouldn't be so much need for flying lessons during first year.
By Somieonie (Somieonie) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 10:33 am:
I think that there should be a shop where wizards could buy books on the Muggle world, and where there could be some sort of testing area where wizards could try out there new skills on real muggles.
By Winter (Winter) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 10:45 am:
247 reader, You make sense but you must also relize that there are other schools OTHER then Hogwarts. Hogwarts is a private boarding school so there might be public schools to that does not require for you to leave home. So then again it might be possible for bussiness. Another thing is that they have christmas vaction that could let them buy items from the HW store...:p
By Thegiver (Thegiver) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 01:32 pm:
247Reader has given a LOT of thought to quidditch. Should there be a girls' quidditch team, too?
By Melinda (Melinda) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 01:51 pm:
There has been some wonderful dialogue! Keep it up. The second question is
as follows:
When the sorting hat is placed on your head, which house will you be assigned to
Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw and why?
By Winter (Winter) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 01:58 pm:
I am not sure...I mean I think I would be either Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or (surprise surprise) Gryffindor. I know I won't be in Slytherin because I ain't that bad ;) I also think I fit into those houses.
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 02:03 pm:
I think I would be in Griffindor or Ravenclaw because. . . I don't know. I'm pretty good. I got the best teachers for normal school (Elementry especially) so I think I will be in the best house.
By Killtomato (Killtomato) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 04:45 pm:
I think I'd be in either Griffindor or Ravenclaw as well. I think I'd preffer Ravenclaw though. It is where those who are clever go. It sounds the most intellectually stimulating of the four.
By Super_Crazy11 (Super_Crazy11) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 05:18 pm:
I think that I will be in Gryfandor cuz it is a brave house, and I am brave and willing to try out new things. Like a backdive into the pool!!! And let me tell you this, girl, it is FREAKY!!!Anyway, who in the world is 247reader???
By Super_Crazy11 (Super_Crazy11) on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 05:20 pm:
Hey, Killtomato, Ravenclaw sounds good too!!! like you said, it is pretty cool. Smart is one of the best things you could be!!!
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Friday, December 14, 2001 - 12:43 pm:
Definetely!
By 247reader (247reader) on Friday, December 14, 2001 - 09:27 pm:
In a kind of contradiction reply to fergus610, there are no "best" teachers and I have to ask the question, and even if there were, how would you know who they were. I mean, you only had 1 teacher per year unless you moved in which case you might have had 2 for one or two years but still, there are a lot of different teachers so how would you know which ones were the best? I also don't think that Ravenclaw and Gryffindor are the best houses. Every individual would think that whatever house they were in would be the best house even the slytherins'. I also think that just because you're smart you will be put into a specific house I mean, think of Neville Longbottom "vs." Crabbe/Goyle. Crabbe and Goyle are in Slytherin, but so is Malfoy, and Neville is in Gryffindor, but then again, so is Hermione. And smart isn't what you are, or at least it should not be what you are judged by. Neville isn't very smart, I mean, in the fourth book, he melts six cauldrons within the first month or so. You are or should be judged by your personality and things like that because even though Neville isn't very smart, he is a funny, nice person and he's friends with almost everyone. Those are my thoughts and I really hope that people aren't judged by how smart they are. Anyways, to get back to the question, I would say that I would probably be in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. I think this because, as the sorting hat says for Hufflepuff, I don't mind working and I am quite loyal and for Ravenclaw, I like learning and I don't really mind what I learn and I am ready for whatever.
By Ticktock (Ticktock) on Friday, December 14, 2001 - 09:49 pm:
Its weird no one says slytherin. maybe they should consider that the sorting hat says that slytherin makes powerful wizards, they don't mind breaking rules, etc.etc. I can think of many, many people who don't mind breaking rules, and who could be very powerful...just a thought...
By Doublestar (Doublestar) on Saturday, December 15, 2001 - 10:33 am:
I am afraid that I disagree somewhat on the content of 247Readers argument. Neville is not necessarily stupid. He might very well be, but you never know for sure in the books. He is clumsy and forgetful, but that doesn't make him stupid. Some of the most intelligent people are those. I for one do not think that intelligence is based solely upon the amount of acquired knowledge, but on the ability to acquire it. Keeping with that, perhaps Neville has but a wandering mind and therefore cannot concentrate very well. I don't know, but I do think that it's rather unfair to make accusation without any reason.
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Saturday, December 15, 2001 - 03:02 pm:
Good job Doublestar! 247Reader, all of the teachers who I had in the ES were great.
By Doublestar (Doublestar) on Saturday, December 15, 2001 - 04:17 pm:
Also, is not intelligence classified as part of ones personality? The third definition for personality in the "Random House Webster's College Dictionary" is "The sum total of the physical, mental, emotional and social characteristics of an individual." Is not intelligence a mental characteristic? Furthermore would you not consider it as an aspect of ones personality? I'm sure that I would.
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Sunday, December 16, 2001 - 11:26 am:
Doublestar, you are SO funny. Ticktock has a good point about Slythierin. I'll bet you that if all the people on this board got sorted, some of us would go in to Slytherin.
By Hotstuff (Hotstuff) on Sunday, December 16, 2001 - 01:22 pm:
I think that Slytherin is a place where more of the bullys of the school go
to. The people who like or dont mind breaking the rules. Even if u arent a bad
person or anything, some of us would go in to Slytherin.
I think i would go to Griffindor because im a out-going, ready for anything kind
of person. ( this is really weird. i mean u dont know who u are talkin to. Who
are u Doublestar? )
By Cheshire_Cow (Cheshire_Cow) on Monday, December 17, 2001 - 03:15 pm:
I think the people who are placed in Slytherin are the ones who WANT to be in Slytherin. The sorting hat thought Harry would be good in Slytherin, but Harry didn't want to, so he was placed in Gryffindor instead. Malfoy and people in Slytherin probably wanted to be placed there...wouldn't it be unfair if you were placed in Slytherin even if you didn't want to?
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Monday, December 17, 2001 - 07:11 pm:
Yeah, it would be weird. You would be doomed for the rest of your life, sort of. What would you do if you were place in Slytherin and you absolutely did not want to be there? Would you tell Professor Mc. arnogal? (I do not think I spelled that correctly). Then again, the hat sort of talks to you when you are wearing it--you could tell it then.
By Fergus610 (Fergus610) on Monday, December 17, 2001 - 07:14 pm:
Sorry!!!!!!!!!!! I was revising my message and I sort of deletet the G in 'Garnogal.' Then, on the top of everything else, I had written 'I do not think I spelled that correctly.' Just to tell anyone who wants to know, I did not think 'Garnogal' was spelled 'arnogal.'
By Tailchaser_9 (Tailchaser_9) on Tuesday, December 18, 2001 - 04:35 pm:
Yes, i agree with Cheshire_Cow too, because people wouldn't want to be, what
they don't want to be. It is the same thing as getting what you don't want for
Christmas, and that would be pretty bad wouldn't it?
By Melinda (Melinda) on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 - 09:48 am:
I am very impressed with the dialogue regarding the sorting hat (question
2). Now are you all ready for question 3?! Here goes ...
3. Harry's frined, Neville Longbottom, does not seem to be as courageous as
Harry. Why do you think the sorting hat placed him in Gryffindor?
On a side note, before we start the next cyber book chat, we hope to have have a
small get together in the library, at that time, you may reveal your true
identities, should you want to OR you can keep it a secret for all time!
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 - 03:29 pm:
Melinda--
Just a question. Will you announce it in the bulliten when we go back to school?
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 - 03:33 pm:
Hmm. Maybe the sorting hat thought Neville might need some extra help or something so he put him in Gryffindor because Harry and all the nice people go placed in there. If Neville got placed in Slytherin he would get teased for sure, and in Gryffindor he would be treated equally.
By The_Giver (The_Giver) on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 - 11:32 pm:
It could be too soon to tell. We are confining our comments to Book 1. The author has three more installments to go. There could be much more to Ron.
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Thursday, December 20, 2001 - 11:28 am:
Do you mean it would be too soon to tell our identities?
By Cheshire_Cow (Cheshire_Cow) on Thursday, December 20, 2001 - 09:27 pm:
Neville might not be as couragous as Harry, but he is still one of the bravest...in a different way. He did win 10 points for Griffindor because he stood up to his friends, didn't he? And that takes a lot of bravery.
By Mr_Ilse (Mr_Ilse) on Friday, December 21, 2001 - 01:18 pm:
Dear All,
I have enjoyed reading your insights into the book, The Sorcerer's Stone. It
sounds like you have an understanding of the book that goes beyond a quick read.
Thanks to our librarians for getting this set up and I hope that I might be able
to join the book club meeting in the library when we get back to school. Right
now, I am enjoying the snowfall and reading my third book of the vacation.
Thanks,
Mr. Ilse
By Winter (Winter) on Friday, December 21, 2001 - 01:29 pm:
There is more to Neville then we see. We have no clue what the sorting hat had said to Neville and the whole series is not out yet. He might be a bit "braver" and have more of a character as we go on. I agree to Chesire_Cow. He is brave in certain ways.
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Friday, December 21, 2001 - 06:23 pm:
Yes. I agree with Winter in the fact that the whole series is not out yet. Who knows, maybe he will have a very big role in the fifth book. Mr. Ilse, the snow was SO cool!
By Melinda (Melinda) on Monday, December 24, 2001 - 12:14 pm:
Thank you for your questions, in response:
i) When we have finished our online discussion on 'The Sorcerer's Stone' we will
have a small get together in the library to meet the participants in person!
Yes, we will announce it the daily bulletin, good idea. Thank you.
ii) When our discussion on 'The Sorcerer's Stone' is completed, you can at that
time, reveal your true identities, or keep it a secret.
Now are your all ready for the fourth question?......
4.) At Hogwarts, you can take classes in Transfiguration, Divination, Care of
Magical Creatures, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. If you were a teacher at
Hogwarts what class would you teach? What would you teach in your first lesson?
By Winter (Winter) on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 - 12:36 pm:
Question: Does it have to be a one of the classes in the book or a class that
has not been introduced in the books?
Well if it is a class that is an old one then I would say Care of Magical
creatures. I would love to teach about magical animals that are not known to the
"muggles"...The first lesson would probably be the class going outside
and asking for mer-men and women to come up and teach the class about what life
is like down there and even enchanting some to go down and finding out.
If it is a new class that is not in the book then I would have to say some kind
of art class. Like painting pictures that move...or something like that... My
First lesson would probably be introducing the "magical" brushes and
the paint that allows pictures to move.
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 - 02:15 pm:
If it were a class from the books I would teach Transfiguration. On the first day I would probably teach exactly what Professor McGarnogall teaches--turning a match into a needle. If it were a made-up class, I would teach photography and on the first day . . .I would probably just talk about moving photography.
By Equix (Equix) on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 - 02:42 pm:
Hi Winter & Ringostarr,
Both an art class and moving photography lessons sounds interesting, but
wouldnft a course on the Defense Against the Dark Arts be more practical?
By Cheshire_Cow (Cheshire_Cow) on Thursday, December 27, 2001 - 10:19 pm:
I think if I were a teacher at Hogwarts, I would like to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts, because it seems really interesting and useful. My second choice would be Care of Magical Creatures, but Defense Against the Dark Arts also include dealing with magical animals, so I would probably pick that. It seemed really cool to battle a boggart, like Harry and his classmates did in book #3. In my first class, I would probably do what Moody did, like put them under the Imperious curse.
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Saturday, December 29, 2001 - 03:09 pm:
Have any of you seen the movie? The classes on there are great. I like how Professor McGarnogall deals with Harry and Ron on the first day of classes. But, the movie is too abridged--they cut off too many parts of the story! However, the magical (camera tricks) parts of it are great.
By Cinderella (Cinderella) on Sunday, December 30, 2001 - 10:26 pm:
In response to Ringostarr, I'VE SEEN THE MOVIE!!! I agree that the movie is too abridged...but yes I completely agree that the special effects were awesome - to make all the magic seem real and everything. Did you notice how most of the Quidditch match seemed to be just made up of digital shots? That kind of bothered me. Okay enough of that. In response to Cheshire_Cow (I love the name, by the way), if you were teaching first years wouldn't the whole Imperius Curse thing be a little impractical for the first lesson? Wait a sec...who ARE we teaching anyway? Wouldn't each year have a different lesson for their first lesson? Now I'm confusing myself. Okay and finally, in response to the actual question, I would love to say that Defense Against the Dark Arts would be my top choice, because that job seems to have the most interesting happenings revolve around it. (For example, Professor Quirrel = in league with Voldemort, and I won't go through the other books' teachers because I don't want to ruin it for any of you who haven't read the other books yet, but those who have read them understand what I mean.) However, in truth I must agree with Ringostarr - Transfiguration sounds awesome! I guess I'm most interested in the use of wands; I'd LOVE to have a magic wand and be able to teach spells to my students. I also agree that turning a match into a needle would be a reasonable first lesson...(it gives me a headache to think in the point of view of a teacher - how do they do this every day?!?)
By Cinderella (Cinderella) on Sunday, December 30, 2001 - 10:30 pm:
Oh, and is it "Professor McGarnogall" or is it "Professor McGonagall"??? Or does it vary between the British and American versions? Argh!
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Monday, December 31, 2001 - 08:45 pm:
Yeah, Cinderella, you're right. What level are we teaching? If we were teaching first years we would do much easier stuff that if we were teaching fifth years. I have no clue how to spell "Professor McGarnogall" either.
By Equix (Equix) on Monday, December 31, 2001 - 09:26 pm:
Hi All,
I think I found it! Check it out:
"Minerva McGonagall
The Transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts, she is also the Gryfindor teacher. Like
Snape, she is strict, although she does in no way single Harry out for
punishement."
Taken from:
http://www.harrypotter.ws/characters/teachers.shtml
Now, does her name still differ for the American version? An inquiring mind
wishes to know.
By The_Giver (The_Giver) on Tuesday, January 01, 2002 - 03:32 am:
Hi~
Imagine teaching Defense Against The Dark Arts. The teacher would have to come
up with effective tactics as new dark forces appeared. What if dark forces
became immune to spells just as some bacteria become immune to antibiotics? You
might also be teaching First, Second & Third Years depending on how Hogwarts
was set up. Teaching this would be the ultimate challenge.
Happy New Year Everybody :-)
By Winter (Winter) on Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 04:47 pm:
To the peoples who want to do Defense against the Dark arts: Why do you want
to do that class? Every year there is a new teacher for that class. You would
most likely only teach one year and then be out of the job for something or
other. Nothing against the class (it does seem very intresting to teach) but in
the third book they couldn't find anyone except for that one guy....Oh I can't
remember his name....Sorry. Slowly I think that the class will not be able to be
taught because of no one wanting to. Just a thought I wanted to throw out on to
the table
By Equix (Equix) on Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 05:33 pm:
Winter,
That`s a very good argument. Perhaps, teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts
isn`t practical after all?
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 06:27 pm:
Yes. It seems that if you teach Defense Against the Dark Arts you have a
bigger chance of getting killed.
I would not try it.
By Cinderella (Cinderella) on Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 08:51 pm:
HAHAHA! (Sorry, you guys sound so worried and everything that it's kinda
funny.) Well, I really doubt that teacher of Defense Against the Dark Arts is
really a cursed position. Looking at the teachers throughout the books:
Quirrel was stupid enough to let Voldemort overpower him, so he died in the end.
(Or I think that's how it goes...?)
Lockhart was placed into the position with people thinking that he did know it
all, when he didn't actually know anything. Because he didn't know anything
about the subject, he had to leave.
Lupin was found out (the werewolf thing) and well...I'll get back to you on that
one!![]()
Moody was hired supposedly to protect Hogwarts students from the Death
Eaters...or I think that was one of the reasons. So Crouch took it as an
opportunity to sneak into Hogwarts. Ummm...I have no idea if Moody left after
that year or not.
None of these teachers was cursed in any way, in any aspect, in any measure,
etc. etc. The only real problem that I can see is Snape, who wants that
position. Oh - one more thought! Defense Against the Dark Arts...if the place
really WAS cursed, how would it get that way? Curses are considered "Dark
Arts," aren't they? The teachers are supposed to know a lot about that sort
of stuff, and would eventually find out the truth about whether the position was
cursed and be able to perform a countercurse. Well sorry so long~ I just had a
lot of stuff that I wanted to say, even though half of it didn't make sense. (HEHEHE!)
By Cinderella (Cinderella) on Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 08:58 pm:
(I do agree with Winter in the point that, because everyone THINKS that the position is cursed, it will be much harder to find teachers for it in the future. I would also like to add that those teachers who do go out for the job will have to possess the Gryffindor trait - bravery. Does this mean that Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers would favor Gryffindor students?)
By Equix (Equix) on Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 09:26 pm:
Hi All,
I think Cinderella has a valid point: In this situation, would teachers of the
Defense Against the Dark Arts courses favor Gryffindor students?
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Friday, January 04, 2002 - 11:33 am:
I don't know if they would. It depends on the teacher. I actually sort of think that they might favor Slytherin students because Slytherin is sort of a 'dark house' and Defense Against the Dark Arts is a dark subject--therefore they might think that Slytherin' students are better at DATDA.
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Friday, January 04, 2002 - 11:34 am:
Sorry--did anyone understand what I meant?
DATDA=Defense Against The Dark Arts
By Cinderella (Cinderella) on Saturday, January 05, 2002 - 06:02 pm:
Ah, but "Defense Against" the Dark Arts..."Defense Against" is a big thing there! They wouldn't favor students who like the Dark Arts, if they're trying to teach how to defend yourself against it.
By Winter (Winter) on Saturday, January 05, 2002 - 06:45 pm:
Ok i do admit it does seem childish but you must see that there is a pattern
going on. I am not saying it is cursed...well ok so I am but Defence against the
dark arts...They can't be just getting rid of teachers in the book just because
it will make a great story. Thist must lead up to something later on. I mean How
long do you suppose this will last? It will most likely go on for the rest of
the books.
The author (I have noticed) adds things in the beggining though they don't make
sence and in the next book or two they do!! For example: hagrid in the first
books borrows a motercycle from serius black (spelling?) and you hardly notice
that detail until the third book and you re-read the first. Personally I would
not take my chances at this postition.
As for who it would favor it is intirerly on the person teaching it. You can
teach anything against anyone so it is not on a certain house. you can hate
anyone but it does not mean that only one person can defend him or herself.
Again all these things must lead up to something...:p
By Winter (Winter) on Saturday, January 05, 2002 - 06:47 pm:
Sorry I just realised it does not match with the others above. This was a reply to "Cinderella"
By Winter (Winter) on Saturday, January 05, 2002 - 06:56 pm:
Sorry one more thought, as to how did this position get cursed you never
know. Like in the chamber of secrets. We never knew exsisted or how it got there
(in a certain amount of degree) Again we don't know why these people...I mean
wizards are leaving for some odd reason or another. In this world things can't
be assumed (nothing against you, Cinderella) So many things have happened that
the author has not written down. She does not need to in some cases. We know
very little (in comparison of how she writes down how many books there are in
the libary and shops etc. etc. etc.) I would like to place a prediction (even
though it is most likely wrong) that when we finish reading the books there will
be still so much more to know and we will still be wanting more things from her.
Personally i wish she would write more books like what happens after he gets out
of school. Sorry I just had to say more. LoL!
By Super_Crazy11 (Super_Crazy11) on Sunday, January 06, 2002 - 12:05 pm:
I would teach Charms, because you get to make things float and things like that. If I cant get that, I'd try for transfiguration, because it is cool too.
By Super_Crazy11 (Super_Crazy11) on Sunday, January 06, 2002 - 12:07 pm:
Oh, Iforgot to say that in the 1st charms class I'd teach them to make the fire that dosent go out. Then I'd teach them how to put it out!
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Sunday, January 06, 2002 - 04:24 pm:
In response to Cinderella, in DATDA you have to do some dark arts, and so the
teachers must be into doing the dark arts in order to teach the class.
In response to Winter, I agree with everything you say. Maybe something will
happen with all the DATDA teachers in the last book. That will be interesting to
read.
In response to Super_Crazy11, wouldn't making a fire on the first charms class
be very complicated for beginning students?
Ringostarr
By Cinderella (Cinderella) on Monday, January 07, 2002 - 06:28 pm:
In response to Winter, I have no response. I'm sick of arguing my points.
In response to Super_Crazy11, I think Charms sounds awesome too!
In response to Ringostarr, I have no idea what you are talking about but I still
don't agree with your (and Winter's) points. See how stubborn I am?
But really, I still agree...with...myself...that sounds weird, hehe.
I have nothing further to state at this moment; my head hurts. But, Ringostarr,
just remember what Lupin thought of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, even though he was
a great DATDA teacher. He seemed to favor Gryffindors. And then Moody was really
good at the Dark Arts, but on the other hand he was a Death Eater. Lockhart
didn't know anything and Quirrel WE didn't know much about. Thank you.

This discussion is going great! Please keep in mind that the focus of this
discussion is on the first book.
Here's another question to toss around: Hermione believes that all House Elves
should be free and paid for their work at Hogwarts. The Weasley twins insist
that the elves enjoy being servants, and don't want to be free. What do you
think? Should House Elves be free? Why or why not?
By Frizzy_One (Frizzy_One) on Tuesday, January 08, 2002 - 12:17 pm:
They should have a free decision. Some may enjoy their work and some may not.
So the way I'm saying is they can work if they want, but they don't have to. If
they choose to work they can also choose to pay or not. So I agree with Hermione
and the Weasley twins.
Don't you agree?
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Tuesday, January 08, 2002 - 04:49 pm:
The house elves don't occur in the books until Harry Potter and the Chaimber
of Secrets. Should we still talk about only the first book?
I definetly agree with Frizzy_One. If house elves do not want to work at
Hogwarts, they should not have to.

By Winter (Winter) on Friday, January 11, 2002 - 01:37 pm:
House Elves in their nature are working creatures. They believe that if they
do not have a master they might as well die! But like dobby he wanted to get
paid. All the elves at hogwarts do have the choice to get paid but they choose
not too. Dobby does get paid because he chose too.
I thought that the house elves don't turn up until the 4th book. I mean Dobby
turned up in the 2nd but you don't know that house elves work for Hogwarts until
the 4th. LoL!
By Cheshire_Cow (Cheshire_Cow) on Monday, January 14, 2002 - 05:20 pm:
I agree with Winter...and also, if setting the house elves free means making them suffer, then definitly I think they should be able to work. I mean, no house elves should actually be free, I mean, even Dobby still wants to work, doesn't he? He just wants paying for his work, which is what makes him different from the others.
By Ticktock (Ticktock) on Thursday, January 17, 2002 - 09:11 pm:
sry havne't been on for ages...busy!!
don't house-elves (at least most of them--as they say, Dobby is one of the
'weirdo's in every breed', to quote Hagrid) like to be 'enslaved'? I mean, in
Dumbledore's case, he doesn't mind paying. But they dont' all want to be paid,
do they...??? So it probably makes them happy to be forced to work...at least it
should!!!

Now for another question .....
The wand chooses the wizard. Describe your wand and its specialty. Is it good
for charms, transfiguration, or another kind of magic?
By Winter (Winter) on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 06:48 pm:
Now that is a toughy....I mean if the wand does choose the wizard how am I suppose to know? LoL! Anyway, if I DID know what kind of wand I would get it would be something that is good for the Dark Arts. When I think about it, I would like to have a wand that works that way, mostly because all this "you-know-who" going around. It would be pretty handy to have a wand that can protect you more then others. I mean it is better at that kind of thing that charms or Tranfiguration. But then again, something like "you-know-who" comeing after me is most likely not going to happen soo....I don't know. That is my best choice.
By Winter (Winter) on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 06:49 pm:
Sorry LOTS of spelling errors!
By Roz (Roz) on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 04:54 pm:
I would like a wand from a rare animal, such as fawkes.
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Saturday, January 26, 2002 - 07:49 pm:
I agree with Roz. Rare animal hairs and feathers are very interesting. I would also like my wand to be good at Transfiguration.
By Cheshire_Cow (Cheshire_Cow) on Sunday, January 27, 2002 - 01:43 pm:
I would like my wand to be good at Charms, because charms seem the most useful, the Accio charm especially! I wouldn't have to get up to get something anymore, I could just accio it right to me. hehe...
By Doublestar (Doublestar) on Thursday, January 31, 2002 - 04:45 pm:
I'm not quite sure what kind of wand I'd get, but if possible I'd like my wand to be of the multi-talented variety. That way I could do all sorts of different types of magic well instead of being limited to just one.
By Ticktock (Ticktock) on Wednesday, February 06, 2002 - 04:23 pm:
no clue about the wand but i guess i'd like one for charms...and fairly small. A huge great ugly one would get in the way of everything...small and light is what id rather have. he he he. Agreeing with doublestar, i like the idea of having a variety of options.

1. Calling all members of the MOB to come to the library next Wednesday,
February, 13th. during lunch time. Please try to be there by 12:10. Bring your
lunch. We will supply Aqurius and dessert. We will talk about the MOB and view a
special video on the making of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
You may wish to divulge your screen name on Wednesday. (Remember, you can
register again with a different screen name for the next discussion ;-)
2. We are running a contest. There will be a prize for the member who comes
closest to guessing the number of words contained in the book, Harry Potter and
the Sorcerer's Stone. MOB Administrators' decision will be final (and accurate).
We look forward to seeing everyone there :-)

About the wand,
Well, I want a wand that is good at Defense against the Dark Arts and good at
charms. I agree with Ticktock and I want a small, light wand too.

By Drdada (Drdada) on Monday, February 11, 2002 - 12:12 pm:
erm....i know this is a bit old but the wand that i would have would be really good for doing different kinds of things that would help me explore alot like using the alohomora spell which unlocks things. It would also be pretty good for playing different kinds of tricks on people.

Thank you all for coming to our luncheon and video
viewing. We hope you enjoyed the get together. Now, for one last question:
The Mirror of Erised reflects "the deepest...desire of our hearts."
What would you see if you looked into the Mirror?
By Winter (Winter) on Sunday, February 17, 2002 - 01:25 pm:
Goodness! Lets see...Deepest Desire of my heart. Now that I think about
it...I not sure! LoL I really am happy with what I have right now but I know
there is something...Hmmmmmm...I will get back to you one that one!
I
really don't know...
By Winter (Winter) on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 04:32 pm:
Ok now that I have thought about it really hard...I would have to say the
thought of no pressure. I mean there is the normal "peer presure" but
it is more like Get good grades, do homework, keep them manners up and DON'T
slouch, be an example to your younger brother a sister, that kind of thing. If I
had no worry of having to do all those things perfectly I think I could be
perfectly happy. But hey thats life right? Hehehehe...This is a really tough
question. I am not even sure if that is it. Oh well.
But now that I think of it...how can the mirror show everyones desires of their
hearts? I mean How would I see all that presure off me? What if the desire is
not to be loud anymore? (ok bad example but hey it could happen)That they wanted
to be calm and quiet. Would it just show the person standing there? I don't
know...This Mirror of Erised is pretty tricky to me.
By Ringostarr (Ringostarr) on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 - 02:05 pm:
Winter, that is a very good point. It would be hard to have people shown in
the Mirror Of Erised if their desire is a feeling.
As for me with the Mirror of Erised, I am not sure. It might be . . .oh, I've
got it! This would be hard to show, but I would somehow see myself and my family
never getting bad diseases. Does this seem stupid? I don't know . . I don't like
getting sick, so I suppost that would be the deepest desire of my heart.
By Potterian (Potterian) on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 - 07:19 pm:
The deepest desire... hmmm... yeah, Ringostar's would be one thing that I
desire, but not my deepest. I don't really know. Maybe it is, because my
grandmother is suffering from cancer right now, and my father has some kind of
disease. I really wish that there were no such thing as diseases.
But the one thing that I truely, truely wish for (and you may think that this is
stupid and impossible) is to fly. On a broomstick, or on wings, anything is
fine. Just not standing or sitting on anything. Not like an airplane, or para-sailing,
but actually "flying" like in fairytales.
I know there can be better things to wish for, but I've always wanted to do
this. I still do now.
By Nonsense (Nonsense) on Saturday, February 23, 2002 - 09:38 am:
I also desire Ringostarr's no disease desire but the deepest desire in my heart is holding the World Cup (soccer) trophy and bringing it back to my home country, Bolivia.
By Doublestar (Doublestar) on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 - 08:35 pm:
I'm not sure what I'd see. But I'm sure it wouldn't be no pressure. I like pressure, it's motivational.
By Kristiegirl (Kristiegirl) on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 - 08:37 pm:
I don't exactly know what I would see in the mirror. I'm suprised that harry
actually got the stone from it, though. I mean, do you think that the stone
could have actually been in there, I mean if it was in like real life? Kind of
like "Wait a minute, reality check!"
By Kristiegirl (Kristiegirl) on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 - 08:40 pm:

By Glitteranddust (Glitteranddust) on Thursday, February 28, 2002 - 08:15 pm:
I really don't know what I would see... i have a question-- if the mirror of
Erised shows us our deepest desires, wouldn't it be a surprise to look in the
mirror and see what our deepest desire is? I mean, I don't know what my deepest
desire is... I do know what I would like, however, but not my DEEPEST desire. Do
you guys agree? Do any of you know your deepest desire?
*!*glitter and dust*!*
By Winter (Winter) on Friday, March 01, 2002 - 03:36 pm:
That does have a point there... I mean that would be a surprise to see what
our deepest desire is.
As to Double Star: Pressure is at times good. But if you have to much You might
start to rely on the pressure so that the decsion was already made. And when you
grow up the pressure won't be as large so it would be like "now what?"
sort of thing

I think that i'd say being an olympian. That is my ultimate goal at the
moment. I wouldn't say it would ever happen but that is my greatest
desire/ultimate goal in life. I think that just being able to be a world class
athlete and represent your country in your sport would be awesome. I would like
to do this in volleyball and/or track. I wouldn't mind doing it in swimming
either but the previous two are better. I think i would see myself running in
the olympics or with an olympic medal if i looked into the mirror.
