U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Before a plant or animal species can receive protection under the Endangered Species Act, it must first be placed on the Federal list of endangered and threatened wildlife and plants.  Our listing program follows a strict legal process to determine whether to list a species, depending on the degree of threat it faces.

The World Conservation Union, through its Species Survival Commission (SSC) has for almost four decades been assessing the conservation status of species, subspecies, varieties and even selected sub-populations on a global scale in order to highlight taxa threatened with extinction, and therefore promote their conservation.

United States Geological Survey (USGS)
