Midsummer

Script

William Shakespeare
Edited by Brent Huber

Our abriged script runs an hour and a half plus an intermission between Act 3 Scene 1 and Act 3 Scene 2. All of the plot of the full length version is still in tact, and, most importantly to us, all of the dialog is original Shakespeare. We moved the show from Athens to 'Tropolis, a modern city with a wooded park. Mendelssohn of the romantic 1800's was ditched for a contemporary soundtrack. Art deco and art nouveau design elements inspired the set. Our delivery is from modern, without a British accent, but the language is four hundred years old, pure Shakespeare.

Act One: Scene One Script

`Tropolis
As Mayor Theseus and his fiance, Hippolyta, prepare for their wedding day they are interrupted by Egeus, who demands her daughter, Hermia, marry Demetrius. Hermia refuses as she is love with Lysander, and is given a chance to change her mind or risk death. Helena, Hermia's friend, loves Demetrius though he ignores her.

Act One: Scene Two Script

`Tropolis
Some amateur actors plan a play to perform at Theseus' wedding. Quince directs and Nick Bottom tries to upstage all the others.

Act Two: Scene One Script

A Wooded Park at Night
Fairy Queen Titania and the jealous king, Oberon, quarrel. Oberon tries to steal a mortal boy from Titania and then enlists his attendant, Puck, to make her fall in love with the first vile thing she sees. Oberon watches Helena plead with Demetrius to love her and decides to trick him as well.

Act Two: Scene Two Script

Another Part of the Woods
While Titania rests, Oberon puts the magic flower on her eyes. Hermia and Lysander enter the woods hoping to escape from `Tropolis and secretly marry. They sleep. Puck mistakes Lysander for Demetrius and tricks him into loving Helena. Lysander leaves Hermia to follow Helena.

Act Three: Scene One Script

The woods
The actors meet to rehearse their play. Puck watches their inept practice and decides to have fun with them. He turns Bottom into a jackass. Titania wakes and instantly falls in love with the new Bottom.

The women fight and then the men attempt to fight in the dark while Puck makes mischief again. All the lovers grow tired and sleep. Puck undoes the damage she caused.

The Woods, Dawn
While Titania and the transformed Bottom sleep, Oberon undoes his spell on her. She awakes disgusted of her dream.
