to drink, because now the NEW COMPOSITION PROJECTS Starts!!!
Here are the members, that are with us:
Marcia DAWSON, PATCH Stuttgart
Brent HUBER, ASIJ Tokyo
Bertram Kloss, SZ-Walle Bremen
Michael Caesar, Canberra
Gerd Walter, Caeci Oldenburg
Dave Beckstead, CIER Vancouver
associated Member: Chris Chater Paris
If you want to write a mail to all this members you can choose this
e-mail address: midi@caeci.ol.ni.schule.de
Please tell me your Web-Page-addresses, where we can find the photos and
later on the personal compositions of the students.
If I have all Addresses and WEB-Pages, I will make a list of all, So
you can visit all Sides.
We have time till the 15th of November to compose some melodies, that
were placed on the Pages of the composers. Please write some words
about the melodies.
The last Date to publish the personal composers web - pages is the
15th of November. On this day the melodies must be placed on the
Web-Pages.
Now at once the planning of this Project:
Please tell me, like Mike and Brent almost did it, if you can't hold
the lines and publish anything later because of holidays or journeys.
Thank You:
Summary:
The project will have the following phases:
First Phase
Starter-phase: 15th of october 1996
Task: Composing of melodies. Creating of the melody-pool. The melody
pool will be published on every Web-page.
Second Phase
Composing Phase: 15th of november 1996
Task: Choose some melodies of the soundpool and compose your own song
with this melodies.
Intro, Interludes and ending parts should be composed by yourself.
Tell the other teams via WWW-e-mail, what melodies you have
chosen to compose your own song. If you like, you can publish
commented provisual results (midifiles) on your Web-page, so
that the other teams can give you a feedback via e-mail.
Try to hold e-mail contact between this phase. Ask other, what
they are busy with.
Third Phase
Publishing Phase: 15th of February 1997
Task: Your complete Song is ready for publishing. Put it on your Web
site and describe, what thoughts you had during the composition
phase. Try to describe the song. what means it for you as the
composer.
Load down the songs of the other teams. Read their comments.
Give all other teams your feedback of all the different
compositions.
Fourth Phase
Discussion Phase: 1st of march 1997
Task: Get in contact with the compopsers. Ask questions.
Tell them what you like in their composition, but tell them
also, what you don't like. All questions and comments should be
answered.
Fifth Phase
Reflexive Phase: 15th of april 1997
and new plans:
Task: Let's exchange our experiences during the project. What was
good, what was bad. What can we do better in the next project?
Any new ideas, what we are doing next? Perhaps an online concert
in the internet? ;-))
Common Assumptions
The project should fullfil the following exspectations:
First:
Every member (students and teachers) should have a Web site with
photo, some words to his person, e-mail address as link and the
possibility to publish his compositions as midifiles. And some words
about the growing of the composition and the thoughts of the composers
about their music.
If students work together as a firm group (f.e. three students made the
songs, then they can get a group page).
Second:
The WEB-Page should guarantee the fast grip of the midifiles for every
student and teacher, who has simultaneous the information, who
composed the song and what the music means for the composers. Perhaps
there will be in a few weeks groups of students between the different
schools that will compose tighter together (that's a proposual from
Mike Caesar).
The students should animated by the teachers to give the composers a
feedback via e-mail (it means not a musical feedback, that would last
too long and could happen later, first an e-mail feedback f.e. Do I
like the composition, what do I like, will I try to make an own
version and so on).
Third:
>1 Why don't we get a list serve up so that all communications go to all of
>us to really inhance communication.
>
That's a good thought I think from Brent. We (Wolfgang and I) think
about how to manage it, perhaps from here.
Fourth:
Brent wrote:
>I am really interested in trying to make a project that musically shares
>and combines the influences of our host cultures. Can we consider
>encouraging some explorations in this direction? What if each country
>posted an example of using their cultural influence for a starter file and
>then from there we let the kids have at modifying and combining them!!?
That is exactly the same I discussed on Friday with Bertram. Perhaps
telepathy between Oldenburg and Tokyo? ;-))
The solution could be: Every Team composes one melody (only the
melody, no chords and no accompaniment). Perhaps the team can choose
an instrument (f.e. Koto for an asian melody), but this is all.
The melody could have 8, 12 or 16 bars, but not longer.
The melody is published on the web-page of the team or student, who
composed it.
The melodies must be on the Web-pages at latest till the 15 th of
november 1996.
Then we have at least 6 different melodies, because we are six teams.
If one Team will compose more melodies, we have more. But I think we
shouldn't have more melodies than 12 (two from each team).
Now we have a melody pool (similar to the sound pool from the last
project). The difference to the kidsong-project and the last project
is, that we only have naked melodies (no chords, or anything else).
Fifth:
Every team has the task to choose some melodies from the pool and
produce a whole song using only melodies from the pool. Interludes,
Intros, endings and variations are of course possible).
I think this project gives every team the freedom to put in the own
influences of their host cultures (that 's Brents idea I mentioned
before)
Sixth:
>>I know that Brent and Dave have WEB-Pages. Are you (Brent and Dave)
>>able to install a special WEB-PAGE only for our project?
>
>No problem just work. I think posting all the "working" midi files may be a
>daunting task to keep up with. It would mean updating the pages at least
>weekly I would think which is a lot of work. Maybe we should consider just
>posting start files but not all the potential various stages of
>development.
There is no reason for updating the web-pages every week, because it
would last one or two month or so to compose complete versions. If the
complete compositions are ready than they will be published on the
WEB-PAGE of the team.
E-mail contact I hope will be all the time. I think we should give all
melodies names f.e. Tokyo 1.mid, Canberra 2.mid, Vancouv1.mid etc.
We can tell the teams via e-mail, what melodies we have chosen. And
what we are doing now.
We should visit the Web-Pages of the other teams sometimes (every week
or more) to see, if something has changed or to give comments to some
students in the other teams.
I hope there will built up an eager contact between all partners, not
only between the teachers but also between the students of each
country or culture.
This was the point that was not happen in the last project. I think
this is the great chance of the WWW.
