10 Reasons to Choose ASIJ

Established in 1902, ASIJ is the oldest and largest international school in Tokyo. With 1,640 students from around 47 nationalities, it continues to serve the children of the many international families in Tokyo, as well as a growing number of local families. So why is ASIJ the school of choice for so many families? Here are just a few of the reasons we think ASIJ is the right school for your child.

1 Our world-class faculty:

The single-most significant factor in student success is the quality of their teachers. ASIJ’s faculty is an outstanding group of educators, the majority of whom hold advanced degrees, who are dedicated and passionate about teaching. We expect them to continue their professional learning during their time at ASIJ and many take leadership roles in local and international professional organizations and conferences.

2 Our internationalism:

With students of around 47 nationalities and faculty and staff from 11 countries, ASIJ’s community is diverse, dynamic and multicultural. We are a secular and inclusive school that welcomes families from all over the world. Serving the international community in Japan for over 110 years, ASIJ has a global alumni network of over 7,500 and the Japanese government has recognized the cross-cultural contributions of alumni such as Hans Baerwald ‘44, Bruce Brenn ’53, Fred Notehelfer ’57, Peter Grilli ’59, John Powles ’66 and Fred Schodt ’68 with Imperial Honors.

3 Our students' success:

ASIJ has an innovative, challenging curriculum designed to nurture each child’s potential and our students love to learn. Their results in standardized tests, such as the ERB, PSAT and SAT, are consistently well above global and US national norms, as are our high schooler’s Advanced Placement exam scores. Every year our graduates attend the world’s leading universities and our alumni succeed in diverse careers that range from being a NASA astronaut or chart-topping pop star to running a global business or serving in the US Senate. 4 Our focus on service:

The ASIJ community is dedicated to service at all levels. From the Early Learning Center through to high school, students, faculty and parents are engaged in service learning activities that range from hands-on volunteer work in the local community to fund raising for international programs. Whether through a rice drive at the Elementary School or a high school Habitat for Humanity trip, students, faculty and parents are encouraged to live our mission of creating compassionate and globally responsible individuals. 5 Our arts and athletics programs:

With over 100 co-curricular choices ASIJ offers K-12 students the widest range of activities of any international school in Japan. Our comprehensive arts program provides students with a wide variety of performance opportunities from taiko drumming in the elementary school to honor choir, band and orchestra in the high school. Student athletes take advantage of our outstanding facilities and experienced coaches and compete locally and internationally in a wide range of sports. Our athletics teams have won several Far East Championships and over 20 Kanto Plain Championships in the last three years. We also have champions on a different type of field as our middle and high school robotics teams have taken awards at several tournaments and represented the school at four consecutive VEX world championships. Our program also encompasses many other activities such as speech and debate, Model United Nations and a wide range of service organizations.

6 Our unique facilities:

With a 5.8 hectare (14.33 acre) main campus and a specially designed Early Learning Center, ASIJ offers the largest and most complete facilities of any international school in Japan. Our 570-seat state-of-the-art theater, black box theater, band and choir rooms and music rooms in each division support our strong performing arts program. Our two all-year artificial turf athletics fields, three gyms, 25m indoor pool, six multi-use tennis courts, dance studio, fitness center, wrestling room and specially designed play areas for younger children give our students the space and opportunity to develop physically. Four age-appropriate libraries, subject-specific resource centers and campus wide wireless network support student’s learning and give the ability to work throughout the campuses. The Creative Arts Design Center, which opened in 2016, features five design fabrication labs, robotics lab, arts faciltities such as a strings room and a Japan Center. 7 Our warm and welcoming community:

ASIJ is a highly engaged international community of current students, parents and alumni that extends beyond Tokyo to encircle the globe. Students and their families from all backgrounds are welcomed and included in a school supported by active, positive parents. Our PTAs provide many opportunities for parents to socialize and become involved with life on both our campuses. Our Neighborhood Village program, which connects current families with new families provides many incoming parents with their first taste of the warm and welcoming school community.

8 Our commitment to innovation:

ASIJ runs a 1:1 laptop program from grade 6 to grade 12 with iPads in the lower grades and we are committed to embedding technology throughout the curriculum at all levels. We continue to innovate in many other areas and were one of the first schools in Japan to offer programs such as Chinese, robotics and forensics. ASIJ is the only school in Japan that is part of Global Online Academy, a consortium of leading schools that offer exciting online course for high school students. Whether it is developing entrepreneurial skills through the Engage Forum, working with a mentor on an AP Research, or taking a film making class in our digital video studio, our broad and exciting course selection enables students to discover and develop their passions.

9 Our environmental values:

We take being a green school seriously and over the last few years have implemented programs, many student-led, to reduce our energy usage by 30%. Our facilities feature the latest energy-saving technology, such as solar panels, and students are active recyclers and composters. Issues of environmental impact are embedded in our curriculum school-wide, and shape our sustainability policies, from energy use to waste management.

10 Our strong governance and leadership:

With over a century already behind us, and only five heads of school in the last four decades, ASIJ is a mature and stable institution with great traditions. The school is accredited by the Western Association of School and Colleges (WASC). Our governance structure and a strong working partnership between the Board and the school’s leadership have ensured continuous progress towards a shared vision of excellence.

These are just some of the reasons why we believe that your children will love to learn at ASIJ. We are sure that once you visit the school you'll discover even more of your own.
