Meet Our Head of School

Welcome to The American School in Japan where our students from nursery to grade 12 acquire the skills, the courage and the vision to realize their potential and embrace the future with confidence. We provide a welcoming environment for all of our students so that they may truly embody our mission statement, which affirms the development of compassionate, inquisitive learners prepared for global responsibility.

Our school has been a leader in international education for more than a century and tens of thousands of students have been the beneficiary of the excellent classroom education, multicultural experiences, exploration of our host country Japan and friendships formed during their years with us.

Learners at ASIJ are taught to identify problems and use innovation while collaborating with others to design and evaluate possible solutions. At the same time, they are encouraged to take risks and explore passions in pursuit of their personal life journey. These strategic objectives are embedded into a curriculum that includes the Reggio Emilia-inspired approach at the Early Learning Center, our Readers' Workshop program in the elementary school and middle school, and the new AP Diploma and our Impact Program in the high school. Our academic program is geared toward developing the full potential of each student.

Both of our campuses accommodate age-appropriate student activities including outdoor play time at our downtown Early Learning Center and extensive grounds, sports fields, three gymnasiums, a pool, six tennis courts and 570-seat auditorium on the Chofu campus. We offer a variety of student activities including visual and performing arts, a wide range of sports activities and competitive teams, student government, service organizations and other clubs. ASIJ's world-class Creative Arts Design Center houses spacious design labs, a practice room for string ensembles, a robotics lab and our Japan Center. Learning experiences at ASIJ include the wider environment that is Japan and students learn the local language and culture in classrooms and take field trips throughout the country.

We employ a group of dedicated, highly qualified teachers who devote themselves fully to our students. They are experienced and professional in their approach to student learning and are supported by a strong professional learning program. You will find them engaging with students in all sorts of learning experiences throughout the year.

During a recent meeting with a group of ASIJ high school students, I asked them what they appreciated most about the school. They were unanimous in describing their sense of belonging, the openness of the environment, the diversity of students who are accepting of each other, school spirit and pride, the way students are encouraged to pursue outside interests, and the respect that students and adults have for each other. I could not have done a better job of describing ASIJ than these students.

We invite each and every one of our parents to join us as a partner in your child's education. Whether as a volunteer in a classroom or the library, or in one of the myriad PTA activities, we understand that parental support for the school will have a positive impact on students' experiences at ASIJ.

If you are considering whether to bring your child to ASIJ or you are already a member of our community, we invite you to explore our website for more information or stop by for a visit. Our Admissions Office will be happy to engage with you and show you around the campus. Thank you for considering ASIJ.

Warm regards,

Jim Hardin
