Bhupesh Upadhyay

Christy Carrillo

Early Learning Center Director

Bhupesh Upadhyay joined ASIJ’s business office in 2017 as chief operating officer/chief financial officer. Prior to this he was director of operations and business at the American Embassy School in New Dehli. Bhupesh received his MBA in finance and marketing from Drexel University in Philadelphia and began his career working for businesses such as IMS Health, IBM Corporation and Oracle. His international school experience began as a student at IS Manila and he also worked as the human resources manager at the International School of Beijing. He is joined in Japan by his wife Sajala and their two children who will attend ASIJ.   Christy Carrillo joined ASIJ as the director of the Early Learning Center in 2017. Prior to that was director of the Early Childhood Center at Shekou International School and director of the International School of Beihai in China. Christy attended Princeton University as an undergraduate and received a MEd from UC Berkley and a MBA from the National University of Singapore. Christy is joined in Tokyo by her husband Tim Littlefield and their two daughters who will be attending ASIJ. When she’s not at school Christy pursues outdoor activities such as canyoning, climbing, trail and road running, and golf.

 


Marc L’Heureux

Genta Branstetter

Elementary School Associate Principal

Marc L’Heureux came to ASIJ from Singapore American School where he was the deputy principal for 14 years.  Marc has 29 years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher in grades three, four and five and a technology coordinator. Prior to working at Singapore American School, Marc worked at the International School of Dusseldorf, Germany, the International School of Aberdeen, Scotland and in the beautiful state of Maine. Marc is married to Heidi a grade two teacher at ASIJ and they have three children; Hannah, Jacob and Eliza.   Genta Branstetter is an experienced educator with over 20 years of classroom teaching in the United States and internationally. She most recently served as Mathematics Coordinator/Coach at the Washington International School in Washington, DC. Prior to that she taught in New Delhi, Tunis, Sanaa, Wellington, Tianjin and Phoenix. Genta holds a MA in Educational Administration/Leadership, MS in Elementary Education, BS in Elementary Education and is a National Board Certified Teacher. Outside of school Genta can be found running, swimming and taking long walks with her chocolate labrador retriever, Kona.  

 


Pip Curtis

Carole Nickle

Middle School Associate Principal

Philippa (Pip) Curtis has spent more than 16 years in international school education. She holds a Masters of Educational Administration degree and a post graduate certification in international school leadership. She is also an instructor in the field of curriculum leadership at the Principal’s Training Center during the summer months. Pip was born in England and raised in New Zealand, and she has worked in Indonesia, China and India before joining ASIJ. She has been a middle school principal since 2009 and has dedicated her career to understanding and supporting middle schoolers. Pip is joined in Tokyo by her husband Darren and she enjoys running, eating out and relaxing with a good book.

  Carole joined the ASIJ community in 2015 as the Middle School Associate Principal. Originally from Canada, Carole has lived and worked abroad for the past 15 years, including teaching in Taiwan, China, Vietnam and Turkey. She has loved working as a middle school administrator in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Japan: three very different countries! A passionate life-long learner, Carole holds a BA in English Literature and Sociology, a BEd in Secondary Education, an MA in International Educational Leadership and is currently pursuing her doctorate. When not reading educational research, Carole enjoys traveling, photography and attending Shakespearean theatre.


Dr Jon Herzenberg

Carrie Bennett

High School Associate Principal

Dr. Jon Herzenberg is entering his first year at ASIJ as the high school principal. He joins us from the Drew School in San Francisco, California where he was the associate head of school for the past six years. Jon has taught Psychology and Social Entrepreneurship as a member of the social studies department. During his career he has served as a school counselor, health and wellness teacher, summer school director, and soccer coach. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. His wife Carla and daughter Indah are excited to join the ASIJ community.

 

  Originally from Canada, Carrie has also taught in Kuwait and Bangladesh. She joined ASIJ as a high school English teacher in 2012 and became Associate Principal in 2016. Carrie received a Bachelors in Education with a major in literature from the University of Calgary and master’s in educational leadership from the University of Victoria BC. Her husband Steve is a counselor in middle school and their two children attend ASIJ. Her interests are traveling, reading and being active.

 

Ginny Prairie

Director of Teaching and Learning

 

Warren Apel

Director of Technology

Ginny Prairie joined ASIJ in 2016. Prior to arriving in Japan, she was a teacher or administrator in the United States, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. Ginny received her bachelor's degree in Middle School Education from Appalachian State University, her master's degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, and is currently working on her EdD dissertation in Educational Leadership and Administration. Her husband, Shane, teaches social studies at the high school and their children, Satchel and Ella, attend ASIJ. Ginny enjoys reading, live music, and traveling. In the summers, you will find her relaxing on the deck of their Colorado home.

 

  Warren Apel joined ASIJ in 2016. He has worked in international education for over 16 years, including positions at Cairo American College, the American Embassy School in New Delhi, India and the International School of Amsterdam. He is a Google for Education Certified Innovator, an Apple Distinguished Educator and a National Board Certified Teacher. His wife Tricia is a math teacher at ASIJ. Warren enjoys traveling, cooking and exploring Tokyo by bicycle.

 

Peter Pierce

Director of Advancement

   
Peter Pierce became Director of Advancement in 2019, after serving as an ASIJ trustee and PTA board member for 2 years. Peter holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BA from Bates College. Peter and his husband Steven have two children attending ASIJ. His interests are traveling, films/tv, live arts, reading and exploring Japan's culinary scene.
