Dr. Jon Herzenberg came to ASIJ from the Drew School in San Francisco, California where he served as the Associate Head of School for six years. Jon has taught psychology and social entrepreneurship. During his career he has also served as a school counselor, health and wellness teacher, summer school director and soccer coach. He earned a BA in Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, and a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. His wife Carla and daughter Indah are also members of the ASIJ community.
Psychology is the study of human behavior and cultural anthropology is the study of culture. My studies in both social sciences support my understanding of school climate, community and what young people need to be their best selves. Additionally, my background enables me to improve systems and programming that make it easier for individuals and groups (students and teachers) to do their best work. I feel like it has invaluable and innumerable applications everyday.
My hope is that ASIJ graduates will look back at their high school experience as a special chapter in their lives, recalling cherished friendships, inspirational mentors, and transformational learning experiences. Furthermore, my hope is that graduates will look back at their high school experience as a time that they were encouraged to explore ideas and experiences and discover passions—that high school was anything but a race to college.
On any given weekend the Herzenbergs can be found jumping a train to an outdoor music, food or cultural festival, shopping the amazing streets of Tokyo, and exploring yet another amazing restaurant.
